Playing Tyrion Lannister in the original HBO fantasy show, Dinklage’s role emerged as one of the fan-favorite characters who miraculously survived all eight seasons.

Peter Dinklage Skips Watching House of the Dragon

I haven’t watched House of the Dragon because I feel like – I don’t know – I just spent so many years doing that show. I’m watching other things now, maybe one day, but it is wild.

He played Tyrion Lannister from 2011 to 2019, and with such duration, it is impossible not to miss one bit of it. “I missed that show,” he confessed, “but it’s like, I miss the life of it more because it’s 9 years, and it’s just such a thing. It’s such a big chunk of your life which is rare.”

Dinklage isn’t the only actor who refuses to see the prequel series. Emilia Clarke, who played Daenerys Targaryen, admitted via Variety that she’s avoiding the show. “I just can’t do it. It’s so weird. It’s so strange.” She likened it to attending a school reunion that’s from another year.

Jon Snow actor Kit Harington also couldn’t bring himself to watch an episode. He told Associated Press: “I just can’t watch it. I think for me it’s just I’ve spent too long there. But I don’t think I’ll ever watch that show.” He also couldn’t watch Game of Thrones so it’s fair enough.

Lena Headey has a short and direct explanation of why she can’t watch House of the Dragon. “Nah. Too weird,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. The majority of the lead cast are still not ready to go back into the same world that brought Game of Thrones.

The show had a significant cultural impact and their respective characters have become pop culture figures. It’s not too far-fetched to think that they will always be known for their roles in the show in their entire career.

Dinklage admits he misses playing Tyrion. The role earned him eight Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, winning four times. He said via The Times:

I do miss Tyrion. He was just lovely, funny and the writers were smart to not only give him the joke that ends up on a T-shirt, but also have him be more than that — in a world prejudiced against him.

He would go ravenously through the scripts because he enjoyed his character’s part. Tyrion became a polarizing character in the show’s final season. Still, the actor defended the ending and then told fans to move on.

Game of Thrones is streaming on HBO.
