I think making sure the characters are easy to remember is important. Like giving them traits that make it easy for the reader to remember them. But the most important thing for me is to feel good drawing them… So it’s all based on my feelings. That’s important to me.

He gave each character a chance to shine on their own by allowing various storylines to be woven together. It offered a smooth flow of the overall narrative structure without disrupting it. Thus Black Clover‘s characters are known for their distinctive portrayal and personalities.

Tabata has also been consistent with his characters’ designs from the day of his debut. He admitted that:

Oh! I think you’re right. They don’t change too much. I do get more used to drawing them, so the parts that change is that I’m able to draw them easier.

On the contrary other mangaka’s modify their characters’ appearance over time. But his firmness has helped the series’ characters become distinct and clear for the audiences. A remarkable feat for such a talented mangaka.

Tabata faced a challenge in providing adequate attention to the series’ broad list of characters. He admitted that the balance of screen time for each character became a problem. For him, it was an ongoing struggle. Especially during fans’ feedback which inspires Tabata to feature particular characters more strikingly.

There’s so many characters I want to feature more, so it’s something I need to work on. When I hear from the fans about which characters they like, that does make me want to feature them more, but I’m not sure I’m balancing things well enough

Tabata employed his creative techniques in the story arcs to meet this challenge. He developed large-scale conflicts in the series storylines. Through this approach, he was able to find many opportunities to showcase various characters at the same time.

Yūki Tabata’s balancing of reader-focused character design and his creative satisfaction seemed to become a winning formula. As long as he continues to trust his feelings with his character-drawing ideas, Black Clover has a bright future ahead.
