Some Marvel fans out there probably didn’t know Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson were previously married, and no – they won’t appear on screen together even if Deadpool and Black Widow dated in the comics. The actor made it clear he does not want to work with his ex-wife.
Moving on, both of them had successful careers in the MCU, and in this world, every franchise has a connection to another one. It’s not uncommon to make some references or drop Easter eggs once in a while.
Ryan Reynolds Made A Reference To Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow In Deadpool 2
Scarlett Johansson had a terrific time playing Natasha Romanoff in the MCU. The character debuted on the big screen in Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man 2, and the actress went on to reprise the role in eight more films, including 2021’s Black Widow.
She has had several love interests in the franchise, although they never really focused on it. She flirted with Captain America, and it was also suggested that she might have had a past with Hawkeye, but this was never revealed. In one scene with Bucky Barnes, Natasha asks him if he could at least recognize her, which is a nod to their romantic affairs in the comics.
But, the most obvious love interest she had was with Bruce Banner. They even shared a kiss in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Many fans would recall how she was the one who could calm down the Hulk. Johansson’s character would say, “Hey, big guy. Sun’s getting real low.”
Apparently, this line was also heard in Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool 2. In the scene where he was fighting Juggernaut, he said the same line that Black Widow tells Hulk. Because Juggernaut is indeed a colossal guy, that line definitely worked. Fans may immediately think it is a reference to the Incredible Hulk, but because it was Reynolds who revised the script, he probably wanted to spice it up and make a reference to his ex-wife.
While it could also be just a mere coincidence since both Hulk and Juggernaut are literally giants, the evidence that it is a Scarlett reference is too strong.
What Caused Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson’s Divorce?
Reynolds and Johansson ended their marriage in 2010 after two years of marriage. The actress revealed that their hectic schedules caused the distance in their relationship. They didn’t even had time for dates so the romance eventually lost its spark.
The ex-pair rarely talked about each other or their split after the divorce, hence why a lot of fans remained in the dark about their past relationship.
Johansson was married thrice, with Romain Dauriac whom she divorced in 2017, and her latest spouse Colin Jost whom she married in 2020. Reynolds has been with Blake Lively since 2012 and they have four children.
Deadpool 2 and Avengers: Age of Ultron are currently available to watch on Disney+.
