The Clone Wars gave the Star Wars fandom a lot of characters that have become iconic in their own right. Be it Captain Rex, Ahsoka Tano, or Ventress, the show depicted a lot of characters in a variety of situations, covering the length and breadth of the war across the Galaxy, from the outer rim to the inner core.

While Anakin Skywalker was the main focus of the Prequels era, along with his master Obi-Wan Kenobi, there wasn’t a clear protagonist for The Clone Wars animated series, largely focusing on theatres of the war and the clones\ Jedi involved therein. The fandom at large, however, has narrowed down which character they might want to consider the ‘protagonist’ of The Clone Wars.

Ahsoka and Rex were the top contenders for the protagonist spot, but Dave Filoni might have liked it much better if The Clone Wars was about the Clones as a whole. Of course, the writer has a soft spot for Ahsoka, a character he made specifically for the film and the series, but the focus must be on the clones after all. These characters were the conflict’s stars, providing a nuanced view of the war and its effect on the wider galaxy.

Captain Rex needs to return to live-action at least one more time

The clones, while technically having a film based on their production, are criminally underutilized in the live-action space. Save for the one clone that appeared in Obi-Wan Kenobi and Captain Rex’s cameo in Ahsoka, there have been no follow-ups with the clones in the live-action space, which is something that they deserve, especially when it comes to Captain Rex.

Captain Rex is a character that has a lot of gaps in his story, allegedly serving in every major battle for the Republic and against the Empire. The character was also on Endor, fighting against the empire alongside the children of his ex-commanding officer, Anakin Skywalker. While plenty of the character’s story has been seen in animation, a Last Days of Captain Rex spin-off would definitely print the kind of money that Disney needs the IP to make right now.
