Being a Ken doll in Barbie land might be difficult, but what’s harder is living with an existential crisis like Greta Gerwig. According to reports, despite the abundance of categories and nominations at the Oscars, Gerwig was surprisingly omitted from the list. Although women getting snubbed at the Oscars is nothing new, this year it simply reeks of sexism.

Greta Gerwig Got Snubbed at the Oscars

Among all the movies that were released in 2023, hardly a few made genuine headlines and captivated fans. A few of those movies have been Oppenheimer, Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon, and Poor Things. Now, quite obviously all of these films made their way into acclaimed categories at the Oscars. But unfortunately, Barbie director Greta Gerwig was omitted from the list.

While the other three movies have been directed by men, Greta Gerwig was the only female director who got snubbed at the Oscars. Now, fans seem to hint at the Academy Awards committee’s sexism, following Gerwig’s omission. Although women getting snubbed at the Oscars is nothing new, fans believe in 2024 it’s something that shouldn’t happen.

According to Marie Claire reports for the past 25 years, only seven women have been nominated for the award for Best Director, out of 125 possible nominations. Out of those seven, only three have taken home the directing statuette to date. Making women a pathetic 5.6% of nominees, the Academy Awards seems to face a dire condition when it comes to equality.

Following these statistics, few netizens have argued that female directors failed to create an impact with their movies, which resulted in a lack of nominations and wins. But for all those arguments, there are two words – Greta Gerwig. The acclaimed filmmaker did nothing less than revolutionize the film industry with Barbie. Her movie not only grossed $1.4B at the box office but also toppled Christopher Nolan‘s Oppenheimer, which earned 13 Oscar nominations.

Fans Point Out Oscars’ Sexism and Inequality

Watching this year’s Oscar snub, netizens began scratching their heads, wondering what exactly happened, and where it must have gone wrong. The Hollywood Reporter thus addressed how the directors’ branch is responsible for nominating acclaimed filmmakers under the Directing category. And although this has long been among the Academy’s oldest branches, it’s mainly composed of male members; to be specific, it currently sits with 75% men.

Therefore, this could have been a contributing factor regarding the omission of Greta Gerwig from the list of best directors, despite Lady Bird, Little Women, and even Barbie being nominated for best picture. Further, noticing how Gerwig was nominated only once for the Directing category despite making a number of films, fans came to the conclusion about Oscars’ sexism after witnessing Margot Robbie being omitted alongside Gerwig.

Netizens are currently shocked and pissed off at the way the Oscars took out Greta Gerwig from the Directing category. Further, Margot Robbie being omitted from nominations seemed like an insult to injury. Gerwig getting nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay with her co-writer Noah Baumbach, is generating criticism of its own.
