John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place franchise is growing by the day, with a spinoff film starring Lupita Nyong’o recently receiving its first trailer. Set at a time when the extraterrestrial creatures first came to Earth, A Quiet Place: Day One sees Nyong’o play a survivor who teams up with Joseph Quinn to escape from the blind creatures who have great hearing.
Unlike the first two films, the spinoff is not directed by John Krasinski, who only developed the story and is acting as a producer. Fans of the series are curious about how the story of the spinoff, which is set in New York, would be connected to the Lee Abbott family who live in a more secluded area. Fans are also hoping to get a glimpse of Krasinski and Emily Blunt’s characters from the first film since it is a prequel.
What Is Lupita Nyong’o’s A Quiet Place: Day One About?
After the trials and tribulations of the Abbott family in John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place series, the new film from the franchise sees a prequel set during the beginning days of the invasion. Similar to the opening scene in A Quiet Place Part II, the film shows the first day when the alien creatures, who attack and devour based on sound, arrive on Earth.
The creatures are blind and attack purely based on their enhanced hearing. The spinoff film is set in New York City, one of the busiest metropolitan cities in the world where noise is abundant. Lupita Nyong’o plays Sam, a woman who tries to survive the invasion when she is on a visit to NYC. She teams up with Joseph Quin, a stranger, to navigate the newly destroyed world.
The actress mentioned to EW that she did not know how noisy the city was until she had to focus on it. She said,
“This notion of a quiet New York is one that will arrest many. It’s an impossible thing to imagine…. When you live there, you block out all the sound quite naturally. You just forget to hear the sound. I realized how hard it would be to survive in a world that required you to be silent in that particular city.”
John Krasinski, who directed the first two films in the series, does not return to helm the project. Instead, Michael Sarnoski, who is known for helming the Nicolas Cage starrer Pig, will be donning the director’s hat for the film. He also developed the story along with Krasinski. The latter is also pproduing the film along with Michael Bay, Andrew Form, and Brad Fuller.
Will John Krasinski and Emily Blunt Return In A Quiet Place: Day One?
The setting of A Quiet Place: Day One is vastly different from the first two films of the franchise. Stars Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn mentioned that while the main films dealt with a family who had to stick together to survive the invasion, the spinoff centered on two strangers who have no choice but to band together to fight it. Nyong’o said,
“When you have a family, there is an innate expectation that they will want to stick together. We don’t have that in this film…What we get is really interesting — and even surprising — chemistry in the characters that meet each other along the way.”
However, the connection to the main films is not just in the common incident of the invasion. Djimon Hounsou, who played the Man on the Island in A Quiet Place Part II, is the only character who seemingly connects the two stories as he appears in the spinoff as well. However, fans seem to be desperate to know if John Krasinski and Emily Blunt would be making an appearance in the films.
When asked if they will be returning for the spinoff film, Emily Blunt reportedly had a cheeky response to the question. In a statement to Deadline (via ScreenRant), Emily Blunt said,
“This is Lupita’s movie. You’ll see why when you see it. It will all make sense. This is just new chapters of it and new ways of looking at what went down. I can’t say everything.”
Though John Krasinski’s character Lee Abbott died in the first film, he made a brief appearance in the sequel in the opening flashback sequence, which also shows the beginning of the invasion in their town. Since, A Quiet Place: Day One is a prequel and is set during the beginning, there are chances that the two stories may interconnect.
