“I mean the idea of like canon and rule and who gets to be [Spider-Man].”

Thompson continued,

“Spider-Man, you know, is definitely, like, a character that is owned by the audience. But some of that audience, like, takes it so seriously and is trying to enforce and restrict.”

“I remember when Miles Morales’ first comic book came out. There are people who were rejecting Miles as a character. You know, for their reasons.”

“[That’s] not how we think it should be. We wanted to talk directly to that almost stick it to that mentality [and really reinforce the message] of ‘No. anyone can wear the mask.’”

“And if Spider-Man is a character that is owned by the entire world. The entire world should be represented in that character.”

Animated character Miles Morale’s debut was in Ultimate Fallout Vol. 1 #4 “Spider-Man No More (Part IV) in 2011’s Marvel Comics.

Why fans don’t see Miles Morale’s Spider-Man as an individual character?

As already established, some fans of the Marvel Comic might never accept Miles as Spider-Man for many reasons, including but not limited to bigotry. However, Marvel also has not been able to give him an identity apart from a secondary Spider-Man. It has made fans disinterested in his character.

For the time the character has been introduced almost everything about Miles has been borrowed from Peter Parker, including his origins, villains, storylines, and more. It makes it difficult for readers to think of him as an individual character.

Apparently, the film Across the Spider-Verse film set up Morale with one of Peter’s old love interests. Also, the main villain in Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales was just a race-swapped version of Peter Parker’s enemy, The Tinkerer. Hence, the maker needs to create a new and separate storyline for the character.
