Activision Blizzard has lost Spyro and Crash Bandicoot developer Toys for Bob. In its recent blog post, Toys for Bob made the brave move to part ways with former partners Microsoft and Activision with the hopes of developing its games independently but not entirely burning the bridge with its careful choice of words. Other studios have taken this route to be in command of their ships, a beautiful display of grit and an indication of quality over quantity projects coming from Toys for Bob.
Going independent opens more opportunities for game developers to explore and try something original without any supervision or oversight from a third-party entity or other partner. Remedy Entertainment just recently acquired the full rights to the Control franchise, which includes the sequel and the upcoming co-op spinoff with the codename Condor and it has the freedom to do whatever it sees fit for the IP.
Toys for Bob now has the same chance with its franchises and could even develop more new IPs in the future.
Toys for Bob Is Parting Ways With Activision Blizzard
Toys for Bob has done an incredible job of remastering for the Spyro Reignited Trilogy and its work on the Crash Bandicoot franchise, but it could do so much more than improve classic games. As it announces its plans to go fully independent, the indie studio still has a healthy relationship with its former partners and is open to more collaborations in the future.
As confusing as it may seem, it simply means that Toys for Bob will have more leverage and leeway than it probably did while it was operating under the umbrella of Activision Blizzard. The leadership within the studio has shown great optimism based on its announcement that Paul Yan and Avery Lovato are committed to the ongoing growth of Toys for Bob.
Reflecting on Humble Roots for a Fruitful Future
It is a sight to see smaller studios take matters into their own hands. Perhaps during its time with Microsoft and Activision Blizzard, TfB felt constricted about the projects it wanted to work on, which is counterproductive to the growth of its studio. This newfound freedom will not limit its creativity any longer and will spread its wings to soar further without being held back.
Toys for Bob has made some incredible games that have been etched in the history of the gaming industry for their unique aspects.
Going independent is a risky venture, but given their passion for game development, it is very exciting to see what the geniuses could create with unlimited freedom as they are entering the early stages of development for their newest game.
