In episode 3 of What If…? Season One, titled What If… The World Lost Its Mightiest Heroes?, Hank Pym’s Ant-Man turns to the darker side. He attacks the Avengers to seek revenge against S.H.I.E.L.D. after Hope van Dyne is killed as an agent. Pym’s killing spree leads to the deaths of Iron Man, Thor, Clint Barton, Bruce Banner, and Natasha Romanoff.

After Hank Pym, another Marvel superhero goes rogue in the upcoming Season 2, as revealed in the trailer and episode titles. In the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill is kidnapped by Yondu when he was eight. Instead of delivering him to Ego, Yondu shows him around the galaxy and trains him to be a Ravager. However, in the What If…? version, Peter Quill turns into a threat to Earth as an 8-year-old boy.

Peter’s celestial powers, as the son of Ego, activate prematurely, and he starts unleashing destruction upon Earth. Peggy Carter, the then-director of S.H.I.E.L.D., puts together a team of Avengers, well before Nick Fury even considers the initiative. This Avengers team includes Hank Pym’s Ant-Man, Bill Foster’s Goliath, Wendy Lawson’s Mar-Vell, King T’Chaka’s Black Panther, Bucky Barnes’ Winter Soldier, and Thor.

The first trailer, released a few days earlier, shows scenes where the Avengers attempt to confront this powerful threat and grapple with the moral dilemma of fighting a young boy. Several theories are coming up online regarding how Peter Quill is led to attack the world / the Avengers.

According to Marvel scooper, CanWeGetSomeToast, What If…? will explore the scenario where Yondu delivers Peter Quill to Ego as promised. After Ego discovers that Peter can activate the Celestial Power, they both attack the planet Earth. While this theory seems plausible, there’s another theory that may explain the premature activation of Quill’s powers.

In this alternate theory, Yondu never comes to get Peter Quill for some reason. The trauma of losing his mother to cancer and being separated from his grandfather results in the premature activation of his powers. This theory also justifies Yondu’s actions in the movies of abducting a young Peter and protecting him from Ego, and more importantly, from himself.
