Ubisoft is one studio known by a majority of gamers. The studio has consistently delivered iconic franchises like Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell, Far Cry, Ghost Recon, et cetera. The studio recently released its financial report for the first half of FY 2023-24.
The report revealed the status of some of the significant games that are currently in development by the studio. Apart from that, Ubisoft also announced recently that it will be shutting down online servers for some older games. It is worth noting the implications of this decision.
As and when this shutdown is initiated in January 2024, gamers will no longer be able to access the game’s multiplayer modes. They will also be unable to link Ubisoft accounts in-game or use online features. The list of games includes many games from the franchises above.
Ubisoft is currently working on Skull and Bones and Star Wars: Outlaws. The former has been delayed six times since its announcement at E3 2017. The game now has a release date window of Q4 2023-24. This means that the Pirate game from Ubisoft could be released between the start of January and the concluding days of March.
Star Wars: Outlaws, on the other hand, was allegedly supposed to come out in Early 2024 but now has been delayed to FY 2024-25.
Ubisoft’s Latest Server Shutdown Affects Some Iconic Games Which Are Cherished by Fans
In the list of games that would no longer have multiplayer support by the studio, there were also specific platforms mentioned. This means that the servers are going offline for some specific platforms.
The entire list of games is as follows:
Titles | Platform(s) |
Assassin’s Creed II | Xbox 360 |
Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood | MAC |
Assassin’s Creed Liberation HD | PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 |
Assassin’s Creed Revelations | PC |
Ghost Recon Future Soldier | PC |
Heroes of Might and Magic VI | PC |
NCSI | PC |
Splinter Cell: Conviction | Xbox 360 |
R.U.S.E. | PC |
Trials Evolution | PC |
It can be seen from the table above that Ubisoft seems to be revoking multiplayer support for most titles for the PC. It is unfortunate that the list contains many iconic games from Ubisoft.
Ubisoft’s official statement on the matter is as follows:
Decommissioning the online services for older games is something we do not take lightly, however, it is also a necessity as the technology behind these services becomes outdated.
A similar decommissioning wave from the company was generated in the year 2022.
Ubisoft’s Recent Releases and the Studio’s Plans for the Future
Recently, Assassin’s Creed: Mirage launched and received generally favorable reviews. The game is the franchise’s 13th installment. The game is set in ninth-century Baghdad during the Islamic Golden Age. The protagonist is Basim Ibn Ishaq, who was also featured in the series’ previous game, Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla.
Apart from Mirage, Ubisoft also released The Crew: Motorfest, which is the third game in the franchise. The title ditched the enormous map size of the previous titles and focused on narrowing down the game world to an island in Hawaii.
The game gathered some praise and was primarily seen as an improvement over the last two titles in the series. As mentioned earlier, Ubisoft’s Star Wars: Outlaws and Skull and Bones are in the works, and the release dates supposedly have an update. Although the latter was not mentioned directly, the former was.
Apart from these, Ubisoft has other significant titles which are queued for release in 2023 and 2024. Titles like Tom Clancy’s The Division Heartland, XDefiant, and Avatar: Frontiers Of Pandora.
Despite the unforeseen delays seen by Ubisoft’s titles due to various reasons, the studio remains relevant and immensely popular for its prior and current works. At the same time, the delays are often perceived in a negative light by fans. It is also important to remember that it is always better to release a more stable game much later than to rush a release.
