X-Men: The Animated Series is officially returning, much to the delight of fans. While DC animation had dominated the previous few decades with hits like Justice League Unlimited, Batman Beyond, Batman: The Animated Series, and Superman: The Animated Series, Marvel had its fair share of cultural and sleeper hits, like Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and Spider-Man: The Animated Series, along with the aforementioned X-Men series which has been rebranded as X-Men ’97.

Spider-Man: The Animated series has the distinction of being one of the most beloved interpretations of Spider-Man. The seminal work was so impactful, that it even inspired the concept of the Spider-Verse. Fans are more than a little excited at the prospects of the series returning, but there is nothing concrete right now. However, the head writer of the series, John Semper, has revealed that he is open to continuing the series, just like the X-Men.

Spider-Man: The Animated Series infamously ended on a cliffhanger, with Spider-Man being taken by Madame Web to locate Mary Jane. The finale of the series, titled Spider Wars, is what inspired the Spider-Verse storyline. The series even crossed over with the X-Men, hence the fan anticipation for a revival. Semper has also shown some enthusiasm in returning to do more episodes for the series.

There are other shows that Marvel could benefit from bringing back

Marvel has had several animated hits in the past, which had been canceled for various reasons during their original runs. One such property was Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, which was canceled because Marvel wished for the animated properties to look closer to their MCU version, giving way to Avengers Assemble, which replaced EMH. However, given how radically different the MCU is as compared to its inception, now the time is right to reintroduce Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, picking up right where the second season left off.

Shows like Wolverine and the X-Men and X-Men: Evolution are also fun takes on the Mutants of the Marvel Universe and could be reintroduced in multiverse episodes in X-Men ’97, before taking on a life of their own. Marvel could also benefit from bringing back the Fantastic Four in animated form, perhaps in their 2006 iteration, or via the reviving of the Silver Surfer television series.
