The movie was considered a near failure in the domestic market.

Following its release in China on 20 December, the movie began making a significant impact at the global box office, as it hit the jackpot with unwavering support from Chinese audiences.
Enjoying its run at the box office in China, Amber Heard and Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, managed to achieve an important feat. Although the film’s overall numbers are on the lower side of $400M as per Deadline, Aquaman 2 earned up to $61.7M at the Chinese box office, which is quite respectable considering the situation in the post-COVID era.
Aquaman 2 Surpassed Lifetime Collection of Oppenheimer
Earning $61.7M in China isn’t all that Amber Heard’s Aquaman 2 achieved. According to reports from Box Office Mojo, the DCEU film even surpassed Robert Downey Jr’s critically acclaimed blockbuster Oppenheimer. Comparing collections of both films, it has been found that Aquaman 2’s $61.7M collection toppled Oppenheimer’s $61.6M collection.
Further, DC Film News noted how Amber Heard’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom surpassed Robert Downey Jr’s Oppenheimer in China to become the 12th highest-grossing Hollywood film post-COVID. This is certainly an achievement to celebrate for the film, as Aquaman 2 had been struggling hard in the domestic box office.
