No one would disagree that Andrew Garfield is one of the most attractive actors in Hollywood. But just like many others, he too felt insecure about himself. The actor, who played Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man movie duology and did a cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home, felt insecure trying on the Spidey suit.
As it has always been, the Spider-Man suit is made of a “spandex-like” material that closely hugs the body of the wearer, which can be uncomfortable and irritating. The actor stated that even getting in shape for the role wasn’t as easy as some of the fitness magazines made it out to be. In fact, Andrew Garfield isn’t the only actor who has complained about the discomfort of wearing superhero suits.
Andrew Garfield felt insecure wearing the Spider-Man costume
In an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, Andrew Garfield shared his challenge of fitting into the Spidey suit. He shared that once while he had put it on for an acting exercise, some paparazzi took his photos, which he claimed were unflattering. The exercise was for him to get comfortable in the suit but he ended up feeling quite the opposite.
On The Ellen Show, he was quoted saying:
“One of the first nights we were out on location in downtown LA, we were in a parking structure. I knew there were paparazzi taking terrible unflattering shots of my, you know, everything. It was an acting exercise. The whole point of wearing a mask is you feel free and you can be whatever you want and you can be witty. That was the whole point; Peter Parker becomes Spider-Man and he becomes this other ego, his alter-ego. But knowing that your keister has been shot from many different angles makes you very uncomfortable.”
A moment that was supposed to ease the actor into the role was made uncomfortable because of the suit that made the actor feel insecure. It became hard for him to adapt to the alter-ego of his character. But he soon adapted it.
Andrew Garfield was frustrated at health magazines
The actor, Andrew Garfield, further mentioned how hard it was for him to get into shape for the Superhero role, and that it made him feel annoyed at the health magazines for making it look easy. In the same interview on The Ellen Show, he was quoted saying,
“I get frustrated with men’s health magazines you know, because it’s like in five minutes you’ll be as fit as a fiddle if you just follow these three simple steps and eat cucumbers, but this is hard work. I wouldn’t be able to do it without someone [helping]”
The actor soon got used to the suit and many people applauded him for the way he portrayed the character, despite his movies not getting the same amount of success and appreciation as the original trilogy starring Tobey Maguire.
He also reprised his role in No Way Home, where his portrayal was brought to the notice of the fans again and they praised and even rallied for a third installment of The Amazing Spider-Man movies.
