Andrew Garfield is known to be quite a talented actor with major hits like The Social Network and his most recent Tick, Tick… Boom!. The actor, however, is also known for his improvised lines that have always ended up making a bigger impact than intended. Marc Webb, who directed The Amazing Spider-man, shared a lot about the making of the movie, including details on the high school setting, casting decisions, and themes. Then Webb revealed the humorous details and the reasons behind his decision to cast Andrew Garfield, forever altering the Spider-Man scenario.

“We tested a lot of really talented, wonderful young actors. And there was a moment when — I mean this sounds ridiculous, but it’s true, We were doing a scene that’s not in the movie, where he was eating a cheeseburger and telling Gwen to, like, calm down or to … [try] to put her at ease while he is eating food.”

Webb does not really recall the exact reason why this particular moment made him cast Andrew Garfield in the movie but the filmmaker believed Garfield remained true to himself while shooting and that made all the difference.

Even though Andrew Garfield’s burger-munching skills are something that the fans did not get a chance to see, director Marc Webb is thankful he got to witness Garfield play his true self. Describing what he saw while Garfield ate that burger, Webb said,

“The way he ate this food – it was such a dumb task – such a dumb independent activity that you give to an actor to do, and he did it … and I felt like there’s something in the way he embodied and committed to that really tiny minutia – I just hadn’t seen before. I can’t explain exactly what I felt like it worked, but that was it.”

Garfield’s munching skills might have made the actor standout, but his instant chemistry with his co-star Emma Stone is what sealed the deal. Director Webb even recalled how well the co-stars go together since they helped bring out each other’s best side.
