Angela Bassett played the role of Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The actress received widespread acclaim and praise, with many deeming it to be her best performance to date. After already having lost an Academy Award years ago for her role as Tina Turner in What’s Love Got to Do with It, fans were hopeful that she might finally get her due when nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the movie.

However, the talented actress once again lost the award, which is a fact many fans can still not process even after all this time. Many took to X, to express their disappointment. Some stated that not only did the movie break numerous stereotypes of superhero movies lacking any real acting, but Bassett was the commanding force throughout the movie.

Other fans were much more brutal with their remarks, claiming Bassett deserved the award more than Jamie Lee Curtis, who won it for her ’18 minutes worth of screentime’ role in the critically acclaimed Everything Everywhere All At Once. Despite the alleged Oscar snub, other fans exclaimed that while Bassett might have lost an ‘Oscar’, she was worth more than any other ‘Oscar’ winner.

It has been a year since Marvel released its most powerful and emotionally enthralling banger of a movie, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The movie and intense performance from its entire cast were instrumental in breaking the popular stereotype of superhero movies being ‘less’ and not being ‘real cinema’.

From strong anti-colonist arguments to its geo-political narrative, Ryan Coogler perfectly covers multiple themes, while keeping the loss and grief of the death of T’Challa close to it through it all. Not only was it a great tribute to Chadwick Boseman, but the movie surpassed the usual narrative of superhero and Marvel movies, reaching a level that even ‘real movies’ fail to reach.

Unlike the rest of Marvel movies, new and old, Wakanda Forever contains unparalleled emotional depth and power while still having all the characteristics of a great Marvel film. To say that Coogler brought all of the MCU to its knees with his one movie, would not be an overstatement.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever can be streamed on Disney+.
