Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s legal battle over their lucrative French winery, Chateau Miraval, has escalated as Jolie claimed Pitt’s request to see her past NDAs as abusive. Jolie earlier argued in courts that she refused to sign a deal with the actor over the estate due to an expansive NDA that allegedly tried to silence her from speaking about any abuse allegations. Pitt filed a motion in response to this argument to turn over all her past NDAs to his lawyers.
Jolie’s attorneys have claimed that turning over these NDAs would be an invasion of privacy for the third parties involved in a deal with her. Pitt’s side argued that these NDAs would help in proving if Pitt’s expansive NDA was a deal breaker for the actress in selling her stakes to the Troy actor.
Angelina Jolie v. Brad Pitt Legal Battle Over Miraval Gets Uglier
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt purchased Chateau Miraval in 2008 for €25 million. The historic estate not only became home to Hollywood’s once-power couple but also a flourishing wine label. However, in a move that blindsided the Bullet Train actor, Jolie sold her shares of the winery to Yuri Shefler, the boss of the Stoli Group, in 2021.
According to Daily Mail, Pitt took matters to court alleging that he was kept in the dark about the Maleficient star’s transaction since they had joint ownership of the property. He claimed that he was the driving force behind the winery business, a claim that Jolie has since refuted. She argued that Pitt’s acting career made it impossible for him to contribute significantly to the winery’s operations.
Page Six earlier reported that the Mr. & Mrs. Smith actress ended a deal negotiation with Pitt to sell her stakes in the winery to him after he demanded the actress sign an expansive NDA. This NDA allegedly tried to silence her about his alleged abuse towards her and her children. Pitt’s NDA would cover his “personal misconduct, whether related to Miraval or not”, which Jolie could not agree to.
In order to counter the argument that the NDA served as a deal breaker, Pitt’s attorneys filed a motion in court demanding to see all of Jolie’s past NDAs. Page Six reported that these NDAs would reveal her deals with movie studios, brands, and employees. It would reveal “contracts that include Jolie’s compensation or compensation she paid to third parties.”
The Fight Club actor intends to argue that Jolie’s involvement in other NDAs during her career suggests that it wasn’t his NDA alone that ended the deal. However, Jolie has made her stand clear that it was the clause in his NDA, which supposedly covered his alleged spousal and child abuse, that posed a problem.
Angelina Jolie Calls Brad Pitt’s New NDA Request To Be Abusive In Nature
Angelina Jolie’s lawyers argue that Pitt’s demand to review every contract signed by Jolie would reveal private info of third parties, thus violating their rights. The court documents filed by the actress argued (via Page Six):
“These third parties have their own privacy rights, and Pitt is not giving them any notice whatsoever to allow them to protect their rights.”
Jolie’s documents also claim that the demands from the actor are unreasonable, forcing Jolie to spend time and money on going through her old contracts. The side argued that it was an act of abusive misconduct from Pitt towards his ex-wife. The Eternals actress’s court documents argued:
“Forcing Jolie to spend the time and expense of gathering and producing all of this documentation is expensive, wasteful, and unreasonable — and the latest manifestation of Pitt’s abusive conduct toward Jolie. The Court should not allow it.”
The legal battle is currently ongoing in courts in California and Luxembourg. The next hearing will take place on May 16 on the recent motion from the actor.
