Angelina Jolie, an iconic figure known for her Hollywood allure and exceptional acting skills, has remained a highly coveted actress in the film industry. Yet, her venture into the superhero genre has been defined by captivating decisions and a tendency to choose her roles carefully.
While her spellbinding portrayal of Maleficent enthralled audiences, it might amaze many that she initially declined a different superhero role before eventually embracing Eternals.
Angelina Jolie Refused To Be A Superhero Before Joining Eternals
In the ever-evolving landscape of superhero cinema, one name that continually captured curiosity was Angelina Jolie. Renowned for her versatility, Jolie had already left an indelible mark on Hollywood.
The 48-year-old revealed that she turned down a significant superhero film before signing up to star in Eternals. The star-studded ensemble of the film was directed by Academy Award-winning director Chloe Zhao.
Jolie revealed that she previously rejected a superhero role before signing on for Eternals, opening up about why she had taken the part.
The Oscar-winner played Thena in the Marvel film, and she had been drawn to the project given its “character-driven” nature. She explained to Empire Magazine via The Direct, without revealing which character she had been offered, she said,
“I don’t usually lean towards superhero or sci-fi films. It’s not usually what I’m looking to do. It felt like something else was happening in this film, though. It was very character-driven.”
It sounded like Eternals had been the right fit for Jolie, even though she hadn’t necessarily gravitated toward genre films like that in the years.
Early in the actress’ career, she starred in action films like Lara Croft, Wanted, and Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Still, as of late, she is more focused on dramatic projects while raising her six children with her ex-husband Brad Pitt.
However, Jolie previously shared that she was not interested in a solo Thena movie but would love to play the character again.
Angelina Jolie Expressed No Desire For Solo Thena Film
In the ever-evolving world of cinematic superheroes, Jolie’s portrayal of Thena in Marvel’s Eternals created waves of curiosity among fans, sparking discussions about the possibility of a solo Thena film.
However, despite her entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe through Eternals, Jolie has expressed a lack of interest in headlining her solo superhero movie.
During an interview with Brazilian outlet CinePop via Collider, Jolie shared her experience of embodying Thena, a character with the remarkable ability to conjure weapons at will. She found it intriguing to portray a character who is part of a close-knit family within the MCU.
Jolie expressed her enthusiasm for remaining a part of the Marvel family, highlighting her readiness to reprise the role of Thena in future team-based films. She stated,
“I loved being part of the family, so I have no desire to separate from the family. But I would be happy to play her again and explore even more deeply the struggles that she has. I think it’s fun thinking of where they’ve been over the years.”
Despite the allure of Eternals, it appeared that a solo Thena film may not align with Jolie’s current cinematic revolution.
Nevertheless, she remained open to the idea of her character making appearances in other Marvel movies, embracing the boundless potential for storytelling within the MCU.
