Director James Wan has recently discussed his upcoming plans for ‌the DC Extended Universe. He even noted that the failure of DC’s The Flash at the box office has cast a very negative light on the upcoming DC films- Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Jason Momoa has previously hinted repeatedly that he may drop the Aquaman persona and join the new DCU roster as Lobo. However, James Gunn has also made some comments that have left fans totally perplexed.

Aquaman 2 Director Provides Disappointing Update

James Wan, Aquaman 2‘s director made a shocking revelation in a recent interview that can devastate Zack Snyder fans, who also eagerly awaited Jason Momoa‘s story’s next development (as Aquaman).

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will conclude this franchise with a few changes to the story’s setting before James Gunn begins his all-new DC Universe. Since the film heralds the end of that previous era of DC cinematic storytelling, much speculation surrounds whether it will feature any sort of crossovers with other heroes.

This could certainly provide a fitting farewell to the universe’s ten-year run. Similar to how Ben Affleck’s Batman and Gal Gadot‘s’Wonder Woman appeared in The Flash. Well, in a conversation with Comic Book, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom director, James Wan confirmed that his DCEU sequel will operate in a somewhat independent manner.

Given that the first Aquaman was “a very standalone film,” Wan noted that the approach was the same for Aquaman 2, with the narrative taking place in its own unique world apart from the rest of the DCEU:

“Well, ‘Aquaman’ – even the first film – has always been a very standalone film. That was always our approach: that it kind of lives in its own world, and that’s kind of how we’ve approached ‘The Lost Kingdom’ as well.”

Also note that in the past, Momoa teased incredible upcoming projects with James Gunn and Peter Safran on social media. According to Safran, the 43-year-old actor “always saw Aquaman as a trilogy in his own mind” when asked about Momoa’s future in the DC Universe.

Do Any DCEU Crossover Moments Appear in Aquaman 2?

Actually, there were rumors that two different Batman cameos would appear in Aquaman 2. Michael Keaton was initially in line to make an appearance before Ben Affleck from the DCEU took his place. Also, the first Aquaman only had some light references to the DCEU, thus the possibility is less in regard to crossover moments appearing in Aquaman 2.

In addition, James Wan also praised Jason Momoa’s portrayal of Aquaman and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s portrayal of the Black Manta. Thus, expressing his eagerness to show fans the effort that went into making this film:

“You know, people love Jason Momoa; people love him playing this role; and people love the action visuals of this space and this world. And that’s what we’re doing: we’re taking it to the next level and we are still expanding – and just any fans of Aquaman the character, that love Black Manta, this is the next level and I’m very excited to finally put out there to show them what we’ve been working on all these years.”
