James Gunn is ready to bring on the DCU for the DC fans and give them the coherent and well-connected franchise they deserve. The CEO of DC Studios already announced that Creature Commandos and Waller shows are the first projects of the franchise, but Superman: Legacy is the first film and will kick things off on a larger scale.

But what about The Flash, Blue Beetle, or Aquaman 2? There were rumors that Gunn is using the Ezra Miller-led film to soft reboot the franchise and lead it into the DCU. However, the latest interview has revealed that he only has plans for one of these characters and it’s not the two famous ones.

In an interview with Michael Rosenbaum on his Inside of You podcast, James Gunn revealed something that shocked everyone. The director confirmed that it’s not the characters from Creature Commandos who will technically be the first DCU characters. Instead, it will be Blue Beetle. The DC Studios boss said:

This could mean that the Blue Beetle film won’t be canon to the DCU as it’s not made under Gunn, but the character itself will be incorporated into later projects. However, it’s not just this confirmation that has made DC fans raise their eyebrows. Many noticed that Gunn didn’t mention The Flash or Aquaman 2 in his future plans.

So many speculated that Ezra Miller‘s Speedster and Jason Momoa’s Atlantian King won’t be part of the DCU. Could it be due to the allegations and accusations that have marred Ezra Miller as well as the legal and public way the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard case played out? Could be. As a result, fans are sharing their opinions on this announcement by Gunn online.

Opinions are flying online about James Gunn’s recent announcement regarding Blue Beetle being the first DCU character. DC fanatics are confused about what it means for The Flash and Aquaman 2. Prominent scooper Daniel RPK tweeted:

As expected there were a lot of reactions to this tweet. Some think Gunn is bluffing to increase publicity for the Blue Beetle film which hasn’t been hyped a lot. Others think that The Flash is already canon since it is opening up the multiverse. As for Aquaman 2, fans are seemingly happy to see it get rebooted down the line due to the Amber Heard debacle. Here’s what the fans are saying:

The DCU architect hasn’t confirmed what will be the fate of The Flash and Aquaman franchises. It was rumored that Jason Momoa could play Lobo in the DCU, and recently it was also revealed that a script for a sequel to the Ezra Miller-led film has been written. As such, it looks like the box office fate of these films will determine what happens to them in the long run.

The Flash races to theaters on June 16, 2023. Blue Beetle hits theaters on August 18, 2023, and Aquaman 2 will arrive on December 20, 2023.
