The DCEU did not get the best of starts after the disappointing reviews for Man of Steel and Batman vs Superman: Dawn of War. Things were not looking so hot for DC at that point, but things took a turn for the better after 2018’s Aquaman was released. Unfortunately, the hot streak didn’t continue for the King of Atlantis as Aquaman 2 scored less than the worst DC movie ever.

Aquaman, starring Jason Momoa, surpassed all expectations when it came to critical reception as well as Box Office success. This is because it even went on to earn more than $1 billion at the box office, making it the highest-grossing DCEU movie of all time. Fans expected Aquaman 2 to do the same but that’s unlikely to happen.

Aquaman 2 Was Surrounded In Controversy Because Of Amber Heard

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom got a lot of fans excited about it for a multitude of reasons. However, the movie has been plagued with controversy since last year after it was revealed the movie would still feature Amber Heard, who portrayed the role of Mera in the first film.

This is because Amber Heard became an incredibly hated figure after her legal war with her ex-husband Johnny Depp. Multiple reports noted that DC was going to completely cut her off from the film, but that didn’t happen – leading to fans being infuriated.

In the end, it was decided that while Amber Heard would be in the film, she wouldn’t get as significant a role as Heard was originally going to get in the sequel film. Nonetheless, fans still felt Heard should have been removed entirely from the big-budget film.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is set to open in theaters worldwide beginning December 22nd but early critic reviews are already out. It is no exaggeration to say that the film has not delivered in any sense.

In fact, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has received a Rotten Tomatoes score of 37%, making it lower than the worst-rated DCEU movie until the film’s release – Justice League(2017), which had a Rotten Tomatoes score of 39% – a sad thing. What was supposed to be DCEU’s last hurrah ended up becoming a major disappointment, which became DCEU’s lasting legacy.
