James Wan is a legend when it comes to horror. Being responsible for some of the most well-known films in the genre, like The Conjuring films, the Insidious series, The Nun, and Malignant, he has certainly established himself as an exceptional filmmaker.
His filmmaker in this genre has certainly been unique to his style of filmmaking, which can be credited to his success in the industry. Despite this, he took quite a step away from his roots, working with the DCEU on two projects that are as far away as one can get from the horror genre, Aquaman, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
While the first of these two gained immense recognition, the latter has not been able to get the same amount of hype around it. With the disasters surrounding this film, it seems that Wan is getting more and more tempered to go back to his comfort genre. The filmmaker recently revealed that he wishes to go back to making horror films.

James Wan’s Aquaman 2 Gets Unfortunate Predictions
The DCEU has been releasing quite a few projects in recent times, that have had very disappointing box-office performances. With Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, and Blue Beetle have been very underwhelming for audiences, but it seems that another name is about to join this seemingly growing list. James Wan’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the sequel to DCEU’s most profitable and popular project, Aquaman, has received some very disastrous predictions.
The film had a budget of $205 million for production, which is quite the standard budget for superhero films. This means that the film will have to make at least $410 million to break even. This is bad because according to Box Office Pro, this film is on track to make around $32-$42 million domestically on its opening weekend, with a total range of around $105-$168 million. Comparing this number to its budget, it is highly likely that the film will meet a similar fate to other DC films from earlier this year.
James Wan Wants To Go Back To Making Horror
As if these predictions weren’t unfortunate enough, a recent interview given by James Wan to Collider suggests that the director is looking elsewhere for his future projects. During this interview, he confessed that he tends to go back and forth and make projects. He elaborated on this, stating that if he has just been a part of a big project, he usually ends up wanting to do something smaller.
“You know, I have a tendency to want to go back and forth. So, whenever I make a smaller film, I wanna go and make a big film. Whenever I’m doing a big one, I’m like, “Oh, I wanna go and do a smaller film,” and when I do my smaller films, it tends to be a horror film. So, you know, I feel like the itch for horror is potentially calling, but we’ll see.”
The smaller project in question, by his definition, is the horror films that he makes. The filmmaker confesses that he has been itching to make a horror film, and it has been to him for quite some time. While he did not confirm that Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’s underwhelming performance is in some way related to this sudden want to go back to his roots, it could perhaps, be a possibility.
