One such practice was reportedly making female actors kiss a bunch of male actors to do a check for chemistry during a screen test. Anne Hathaway mentioned that it was a common practice in the early 2000s and that she did not voice it out at the time as she did not want to be labeled ‘difficult’ and lose out on opportunities. She said to V Magazine,

“I was told, ‘We have ten guys coming today and you’re cast. Aren’t you excited to make out with all of them?’ And I thought, ‘Is there something wrong with me?’ because I wasn’t excited. I thought it sounded gross.”

The actress mentioned that though it was not a ‘power play’ by any production teams, it was normalized and was a product of a different time. She said that now they knew better and that it was not practiced during auditions anymore.

Anne Hathaway has come a long way since her breakthrough in the early 2000s. The actress has gone from being popular for her family dramas to being an Oscar-winning actress with a net worth of $80 million (via Celebrity Net Worth). Hathaway has also dabbled with production like many of her contemporaries such as Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston.

Hathaway reportedly changed things in her production and stopped the disgusting screen test practice that she had to go through in the early 2000s. She mentioned to V Magazine that she made sure that the actors who came in to audition for the film The Idea of You were more comfortable and did not have to kiss other actors to find the right fit. She said,

“We asked each of the actors coming in to choose a song that they felt their character would love, that they would put on to get my character to dance, and then we’d do a short little improv. I was sitting in a chair like we had come in from dinner or a walk or something, we pressed play, and we just started dancing together.”

As an actor-turned-producer, Anne Hathaway mentioned that she never thought that she did not have power and that she would not be able to express her opinions while she was on the set of her breakthrough film The Princess Diaries. She said that it was only when she went on other sets that she realized that it was a normal occurrence.
