When Yamato was first introduced in One Piece, the manga identified the character as Kaido’s daughter. So, initially, everyone thought that ‘she/her’ were the pronouns that Yamato would use. But it changed after she found the travel diary of Kozuki Oden. After reading it, she started to call herself Kozuki Oden and began to identify as a boy.

Yamato was often imprisoned and brutally beaten down by Kaido for wanting to become like Kozuki Oden. Even though neither of them had a loving relationship with each other, Kaido used to call Yamato a son. One Piece has often addressed Yamato as ‘Boku’, which is a pronoun for a male. Even major anime and manga platforms address Yamato as a trans-man.

Eiichiro Oda’s magnum opus has a lot of diversity. The creator has also introduced characters to explore the gender complexities: Kikunojo, Izo, Ivankov, and now Yamato. So, in a way, One Piece has answered that Yamato is a trans/gender-fluid person. Being born as a female and being addressed as a male is her life.

How Could Someone Determine Yamato’s Gender In One Piece?

There are several examples in the One Piece manga and anime about how someone could explore and learn about Yamato’s gender. The most obvious one is that Yamato is a self-proclaimed Kozuki Oden, who happens to be a male. Yamato’s introduction in One Piece was with a Hannya mask, which symbolizes female demons in Japanese culture.

Then, in episode 1078 of the Wano arc, Nico Robin addressed Yamato as a ‘funny boy’. Luffy calls him Yamao (like he calls Trafalgar D. Water Law Tra-o), which literally means ‘Yama-bro’.

At the end of the Wano arc, Yamato was seen joining the boys in the hot spring rather than going with the girls. This made Sanji have a critical nosebleed. These indications are quite clearly pointing at one thing: Yamato being a trans/gender-fluid person.
