The PlayStation State of Play came to a close on a high note as Team Asobi revealed that Astro Bot is getting his own full-fledged game this year. The adorable bot has quickly climbed the ranks and become somewhat of a mascot for Sony’s platform, but before the robot came into the players’ lives, there used to be another icon who may have been forgotten.

Being one of the most recognizable gaming characters not that long ago, the former PlayStation mascot deserves to be treated with more respect, and only Astro Bot has the potential to help him out with his relevance.

Astro Bot Respects Those Who Came Before, and a Return to LittleBigPlanet Is Overdue

Astro Bot emerged as a wholesome entry during the otherwise intense State of Play.

In the good old PlayStation 3 days, whenever someone used to think of Sony’s console, it was natural for LittleBigPlanet to come up because it used to be the platform’s signature series. Led by Sackboy, the character became the mascot for PlayStation long before Astro Bot existed.

But with the kind of respect that Team Asobi shows towards other IPs that came before, it’d make sense for the upcoming title to feature the overlooked icon in some capacity. The Astro Bot trailer itself included references and Easter eggs that gaming veterans would likely recognize, and considering how Sackboy has appeared in various forms in older Team Asobi games, the chances of a potential collaboration are pretty high.

It would not be an Astro Bot game without cameos from other PlayStation icons, so fans looking forward to the title can be found speculating and hoping for certain characters to appear in the title.

Naturally, the LittleBigPlanet protagonist is someone that players want to make a worthy comeback, and there is not a better title for him to do it in than Team Asobi’s upcoming adventure.

Sackboy’s last major appearance was when he headlined A Big Adventure nearly four years ago, since which he has been reduced to being the main character of a mobile game, so giving him a wholesome welcome back to the forefront in 2024 feels like the respectful thing to do.

The PlayStation Mascots Are Two Sides of the Same Coin

Given that Team Asobi’s main character is literally a robot, its existence in today’s world feels much more suitable than that of the LittleBigPlanet protagonist, but despite the difference in their respective eras, fans think that the two mascots feel somehow connected to one another.

The PlayStation community never really got to properly bid farewell to Sackboy, and the character has not had the chance to officially pass on the torch to Astro Bot either.

While every new detail about the upcoming Team Asobi game makes it sound even better, a collaborative effort between the two PlayStation mascots would elevate the entire experience.

It could be the best way to honor the past and embrace the future, and due to its ability to bring so many worlds together, Astro Bot can truly bring LittleBigPlanet back from the dead.
