Lunar Lander: Beyond has been developed by Dreams Uncorporated, and together with Atari, the duo has debuted its upcoming title on Steam Next Fest October 2023. The event marked the official launch of the game’s first gameplay trailer, along with a demo for fans who have been looking forward to the next Atari video game. For those unfamiliar with Dreams Uncorporated, it is an indie developer behind titles like the role-playing game Cris Tales.

You can check out the newly released gameplay trailer for Lunar Lander: Beyond here. According to the official description that accompanies the latest footage, players will have to “navigate” their “way through dangerous planets and avoid going mad” while completing various “missions.” Moreover, you can also go to Steam to actually play the demo of the game to see if it is for you and to help you make up your mind before picking it up next year.

For more context regarding Atari’s upcoming title, Lunar Lander: Beyond is actually based on a vector arcade video game that came out more than four decades ago, in 1979. The original game was simply called Lunar Lander, and Beyond basically aims to recreate it by incorporating additional elements like an actual story and level progression without losing any of the charm of the 70s classic.

The game was first announced earlier this year in July, and the announcement trailer did not exactly give any substantial details about it.

Sure, the announcement trailer for Lunar Lander: Beyond looked great and extremely cinematic, but it just confused the gaming community regarding the game’s true nature. In fact, the trailer’s tone was quite somber and melancholic, and when compared with the official synopsis that followed it, things became even more puzzling because the latter just seemed to focus on a typical space adventure.

What to Expect From Atari’s Lunar Lander: Beyond

The original Lunar Lander is actually quite a beloved and popular Atari title among OG gamers, and Dreams Uncorporated bringing it back with modern technology has definitely caught the gaming community’s attention. Plenty of questions regarding how exactly the game would be played on current-gen consoles arose, but considering how the original title’s anti-gravity gameplay was pretty innovative for its time, Lunar Lander: Beyond could definitely surprise players.

Countless titles have tried to recreate the 1979 classic’s formula throughout the last four decades, which is a testament to how influential it really was.

However, the way Atari is marketing Lunar Lander: Beyond is truly intriguing because it is making it sound more serious than it originally was. With warnings like “beware of mounting stress levels” and words such as “harrowing hallucinations” and “cosmic-induced madness,” one cannot even imagine the direction in which this reimagining will be going.

Fans of the relatively straightforward original title are probably wondering about the surprise tricks that Lunar Lander apparently has up its sleeves to cause such intense “hallucinations.”

Nonetheless, Lunar Lander: Beyond is undeniably turning into an interesting upcoming video game. Players will be able to select the pilot of their choice and choose between four different ships to customize. In addition, there are going to be a decently-numbered 30 missions that players will be able to tackle across five celestial bodies. The gameplay trailer also highlights the fact that missions will have plenty of variety, so the game should hopefully not get repetitive.

You can try out the Lunar Lander: Beyond demo until October 16th on Steam.
