Some were already there to fight Thanos, while others came through portals created by Doctor Strange and Wong.

Dan Deleeuw, a Marvel VFX supervisor who’s also the director of Loki’s second episode in Season 2, discussed his work on Avengers: Endgame with ComicBook.com. He shared insights about his experience working on the film:

“It was interesting because there was a lot of different ideas. There was a version of the cut, the day that we had all the actors together, and it was like this long panning shot across all the actors.”

As it turns out, the portal’s moments originally didn’t give each character a big return moment. Deleeuw recalled:

“It was the day that everyone was there and it was like this giant, expensive in essentiality you had all the actors there, but it just didn’t play as well as we wanted.”

Now, Deleeuw confirmed that the scene was initially different from what we see in the movie today. But it only made Evans’ Captain America character shine, resulting in one of the spectacular moments in Avengers: Endgame.
