Rebel Without a Cause (1955) contains a scene where actor James Dean gets involved in a switchblade fight. The switchblade was actually real because Dean refused to use the prop while filming the scene. As a result, Dean was injured several times.

Director Nicholas Ray stopped the knife fight scene after noticing that Dean got a cut on his ear and was bleeding. Dean then got angry and told him,

“Don’t you ever cut a scene while I’m having a real moment.”

Multiple scenes in the movie were improvised by James Dean as the director realized Dean has the “power to touch youthful audiences.

Roughly a month after the release of Rebel Without a Cause (1955), James Dean, 24, was driving his Porsche 550 Spyder “Little Bastard” on U.S. Route 466 near Cholame, California, when a 1950 Ford Tudor, driven by a 23-year-old, collided with Dean’s Porsche.

Mechanic Rolf Wütherich, who was sitting in the passenger seat of the Porsche was thrown out of the car while Dean was in the car and sustained numerous fatal injuries, including a broken neck. The actor’s death was described as “instantaneous.” Dean was on his way to the Salinas Road Race event in his newly bought 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder that was supposed to be on display at the event.
