The 2024 BAFTA Awards was held recently and many amazing films received deserving awards in various categories. Major films like Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things dominated the event by winning seven and five BAFTA awards respectively. Nolan’s Oppenheimer went on to win the top prize for Best Film.
Additionally, many high-profile celebrities who made their name in films, games, and TV who passed away last year were honored at the event. Many were shocked that the BAFTAs omitted FRIENDS star Matthew Perry. The Academy has now released its mistake and has addressed the situation.
BAFTA Will Now Honor Matthew Perry at Its TV Awards Later This Year
The BAFTA awards were held recently, celebrating the best film of the past year. Christopher Nolan and the whole team of Oppenheimer dominated the night with major wins in various categories including Best Film, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actor. Celebrities like Tina Turner, Glenda Jackson, Julian Sands, Jane Birkin, and Michael Gambon were honored at the In Memoriam segment of the award ceremony.
However, one shocking omission drew significant criticism from a lot of people. FRIENDS star Matthew Perry who tragically passed away last year was not included in the list and the academy received backlash from audiences. The academy has now taken in the criticism and has now addressed that the actor will be honored at the BAFTA TV awards later this year. A spokesperson told People,
“I can confirm Matthew Perry will be remembered in our forthcoming BAFTA Television Awards.”
The omission certainly came out of left field and it is understandable why fans were angry at BAFTA to leave out such a revered name in Hollywood. Nevertheless, the academy has made sure to honor the actor and fans can now heave a sigh of relief.
Cillian Murphy Gives Heartfelt Speech at The BAFTA Awards
Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer won big at the BAFTAs where the film nabbed 7 wins in various categories including Best Film. Cillian Murphy who played J. Robert Oppenheimer in the film won Best Actor at the awards ceremony. He gave a heartfelt acceptance speech where he thanked Nolan and his wife Emma Thomas for pushing him and revealing a side of him that he didn’t know existed.
He also gave a shoutout to his cast of the film, the ‘Oppenhomies’ for their constant support and contribution to the film. Murphy also expressed his love for his wife Yvonne McGuinness and their two sons. He said (via BBC),
“Oh boy, holy moly, thank you very, very much BAFTA. The most dynamic, kindest producer-director partnership in Hollywood: Chris Nolan and Emma Thomas, thank you for seeing something in me that I probably didn’t see in myself. My fellow nominees and my Oppenhomies, I know it’s a cliche to say, but I’m in awe of you. And finally, to Yvonne, Malachy, and Aran you are my best friend and I love you so much.”
Nolan and Robert Downey Jr also won Best Director and Best Supporting Actor at the BAFTAs. The film is expected to have a similar awards count at the Oscars next month. Fans can watch the Nolan epic on Peacock.
