For all of the people that are unaware, Baldur’s Gate 3 is going to be a massive game for fans and according to its developer Larian Studios, it is said to be approximately 122GB. Moreover, it’s only fair to warn all fans of the project that you will not be able to preload any of it before the release date on August 3. That will most likely anger a few fans, especially given how large the download is, but it sounds like it still might be worth the wait.

The big kahuna over at Larian Studios Swen Vincke claimed that he wasn’t sure how preloading would be handled. During an interview with itmeJP, he said,

“I imagine that they’re going to do something, but I actually don’t know,” Vincke said. “It’s very large, so it would be cool. Obviously the game has changed tremendously versus early access, versus what’s out there now … so we will see.”

To make a long story short, the simple answer was “no.” Moreover, Vincke has said,

“The full release of the game weighs in at approximately 122 GB. Please note that your early access save games will not be compatible at launch; however, so much has changed that it’s really worth it to start fresh.”

Vincke warned fans that there is no purpose in getting the early access version of Baldur’s Gate 3 because players would have to essentially start over in a few days as there would be some bytes that are the same.

If you have slow or unreliable internet, it’s more than likely that trying to preload a game that size will be a daunting and sisyphean task. For a brief rundown on certain things and what happens when you download files, preloading a game downloads files but keeps them encrypted until it’s a done deal, but since Baldur’s Gate 3 has been out for a couple of years in early access, Steam is unable to do that.

Regardless of all of that, 122GB would already use up a good chunk of a player’s computer data. Either way, Baldur’s Gate 3 unlocks in full at 8 am PT/11 am ET/4 pm BST on August 3.

What do you think of Baldur’s Gate 3’s size and scope? Is it worth the wait and GB usage? Let us know in the comments.
