When the information in regard to the Mind Flayer skill tree was released, a lot of fans were very excited to hear about it, but when fans were told what it would cost, many started to have second thoughts. For those who are enthusiastic about gaining Mind Flayer abilities, there is some information you will want to know beforehand, such as to acquire these abilities, the player will have to venture throughout the land to find numerous Mind Maggots, which can be found in random jars and even already infected minds which players can then pull the Mind Maggots out and use them on yourself.

To many players, this won’t sound too bad as it will be a significant plot point in the game and has been made a part of the character on purpose. Still, by using these Mind Maggots, it will slowly change your playable character into a Mind Flayer, giving them five special categories worth of abilities amounting to up to 25 abilities which can be equipped by your playable character; these characters are as follows; Psionic, Manipulation, Health Restoration and finally abilities which can just straight up harm or debuff enemies through a fight.

Due to these Mind Maggots, the player character will slowly change into a Mind Flayer, and as even stated by the developers, players can even progress to the point of changing into a “displacer beast“, which is a common feline enemy in Dungeons and Dragons.

What will the secret Baldur’s Gate 3 Mind Flayer skill tree look like, and are there other uses for the Mind Maggots?

Baldur's Gate 3 Mind Flayer

Many gamers will be wondering what makes this such a horrifying aspect of the game and why it can be concerning for certain players. Well, in regard to the skill tree, the actual view of the skill tree will be of the player character’s brain, which we will be able to see in full as the corruption slowly takes it over, but this isn’t the worst of it as to gain these ability upgrades players will have to personally choose and insert a Mind Maggot into their characters brain to be able to gain access to the ability they want to use.

Many players won’t mind this, but it can be quite a disgusting view seeing a Maggot burrowing into a person’s brain, so hopefully, it won’t be too horrible to watch, and it will be a quick animation if there is any at all. This is intended to help show how the infection is taking over the player character’s brain and to try and encourage players not to use this skill tree, but the abilities are so strong that it will also encourage players to use the Mind Maggots in this skill tree.

If players do not want to progress with this skill tree, then have no fear, as there will still be a use for these Mind Maggots as some of the companions throughout Baldur’s Gate 3 will actually eat these Maggots and will appreciate being given them, but be warned as giving these Mind Maggots to the wrong companions could leave to that companion having a large change of heart to the main character and could ultimately affect their relationship together.
