“It’s still full of the DNA that infuses the Batman: Arkham series”: Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is Touted as Rocksteady’s ‘biggest game’, as if That Makes Up for the Concerns of Fans

The makers of the game seem to have full faith in the title, even after a lacklustre series of previews and alpha tests.

The game is still in the preview phase and will be released soon, but people seem to dislike some of its elements already. The bloated UI with too much information on the screen every time, everywhere, the live-service offering, and relevant backlash are among many problems people have with the game. Now, the game’s product director has come up to defend its offering, saying that it is cut from the same cloth as titles from the Arkhamverse.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’s Product Director’s ambitious claim about the title

The title has not had a good start, with several people complaining about several aspects and the plot leaks that did not go down well with fans, not that they are indicative of the real thing. The developer, known for developing the famous Batman Arkham titles, is seen launching their first title in nine long years, so the stakes are also inevitably high.

Live service titles have almost always been met with skepticism from fans as they tend to hint towards a money-hungry mindset. This is looked down upon when compared to studios and titles known for their quality, regardless of whether they periodically offer new content.

Almost solely because consumers know better than to mix quality with quantity, in conversation with Play Magazine in Issue 36, the game’s product director made a somewhat ambitious claim. This is even after because the director did nothing more than draw parallels between the upcoming title and the gold standard of Superhero titles, the Batman Arkham series developed by the same studio. Darius Sadeghian spoke about the upcoming game focusing on the anti-heroes and said:

It’s still full of the DNA that infuses the Batman: Arkham series – those foundations of story and character are absolutely central to our process…Story-wise, this is easily our biggest game.

The claim was seemingly made because gamers haven’t forgotten Marvel’s Avengers nightmare and how it seemingly rained on any upcoming live-service title’s parade. While most fans have yet to play the title since no demo is available and are only basing their conclusions on the gameplay footage and trailers, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League might surprise them.

That is also because, after all, live service or not, it is still a Rocksteady game. The studio should ideally have no problem doing what they do best: weaving a tapestry that uses their experience and competence. We can expect a good lineup of characters with brilliant animations, voice acting, and an engaging narrative to keep the player hooked and ideally left wanting more. Talking and also justifying the studio’s judgment of making the title a live-service one, Sadeghian had this to say:

[the team is] really keen on being there for players who want to stay with us and continue the adventure…It’s really important to us that we’re generous with the people who play our game, so for the first year after launch we’ve got masses of new content that will be completely free for people who own the game.

When looking at the title, people also complain about other elements besides the live service game. Firstly, the traversal mechanics and the gunplay can easily make one reminisce of modern-day Fortnite. That is because every playable character, even the ones fans won’t expect, is wielding firearms.

That is coupled with some additional melee abilities and other equipment. For example, it feels weird to see King Shark wielding a minigun and Captain Boomerang, not primarily using a boomerang! That being mentioned, it is worth noting that not every character’s gameplay looks the same; there are quirks about them and some minor elements of uniqueness and allure. That said, the Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League looks lukewarm primarily.
