The Batman Arkham Trilogy, developed by Rocksteady Studios and published by Warner Bros. Games, is one of the most popular gaming trilogies of all time. It’s also considered by many gamers to be the best superhero series in video games. Known for its amazingly responsive and fluid combat system, dark, gritty storytelling, and stellar performances, the franchise has fans the world over.
Earlier this year, during the Nintendo Direct that took place in June, it was announced that the Batman Arkham Trilogy would be making its way over to the Nintendo Switch as one package. This would include all three base games as well as their respective DLCs, and it was supposed to be released on October 13. Now, though, Warner Bros. Games has announced a delay and a new release date.
When Will the Batman Arkham Trilogy Be Released on the Switch?
Warner Bros. Games took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce that the Batman Arkham Trilogy will now be released on December 1, 2023. Explaining its reasoning for the delay in the same post, it said:
“More time is needed to bring players the best possible experience on Nintendo Switch. We apologise to fans who are excited to play this version of the trilogy. Thank you for your patience.”
Though unconfirmed, many in the gaming community suspect that this postponement of the release date is in light of Mortal Kombat 1 doing very poorly on the Nintendo Switch in terms of its graphics and performance. It’s understandable that the developers and publishers would want to avoid a similar fiasco with Batman too.
A Brief History of the Batman Arkham Games
For those unaware, the trilogy contains three games: Batman: Arkham Asylum, Batman: Arkham City, and Batman: Arkham Knight. Arkham Asylum was released first in 2009 on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, followed by Arkham City on the same platforms in 2011, followed by the WiiU a year later. The final game of the Batman Arkham Trilogy, Arkham Knight, was released in 2015 on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
Then there’s also Batman: Arkham Origins, which was released in 2013, but wasn’t developed by Rocksteady, with Warner Bros. Montreal taking the reins instead. Considered by most fans to be the weakest entry in the series, the game is a prequel to Arkham Asylum and was released for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, WiiU, and PC.
Each of the four games puts players in control of Batman, and each game is progressively bigger than the last. Arkham Asylum, for instance, takes place solely in the titular asylum, while Arkham City takes place in a cordoned-off area of Gotham City called Arkham City, which is meant to act as a prison for criminals.
Arkham Origins takes place in Gotham City with a map twice the size of Arkham City, and Arkham Knight also takes place in Gotham City, while also introducing the Batmobile for faster traversal and new combat.
All three of the games developed by Rocksteady-Batman: Arkham Asylum, Batman: Arkham City, and Batman: Arkham Knight–were released to critical acclaim, while Batman: Arkham Origins was less so but had many positive reviews nonetheless.
