The Batman Arkham series is one of the most beloved superhero games of all time, and one of the best too, if not the best. Starting with Arkham Asylum in 2009, the games developed by Rocksteady featured fast, responsive combat, a dark, mature story, and most importantly of all made players feel like Batman.

Despite its popularity, Rocksteady is now working on Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, and the last time we saw Batman in a video game was 2022’s Gotham Knights, developed by Warner Bros. Montreal. That game received a lukewarm reception from both critics and fans owing to several bugs, poor storytelling, and a live–service implementation that left a lot to be desired. A recent report has shed some light on what Warner Bros. Montreal is working on following Gotham Knights.

What game is developer Warner Bros. Montreal said to be working on?

To no one’s surprise, the game Warner Bros. Montreal is said to be working on is a Batman game and unlike Gotham Knights or even Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, it is a traditional single-player game. That’s just like the Arkham series, which should relieve some fans at least. It also makes sense since Gotham Knights was about Batman’s sidekicks and protégés coming into their own after his death.

A recent job listing revealed that the developer was recruiting a Lead Gameplay Programmer for this alleged single-player Batman game. The job description asks for working experience with Unreal Engine 4, which was what Gotham Knights ran on, and Unreal Engine 5 as well. This new game is said to have started production in December 2022, a few months after the launch of Gotham Knights.

Which Batman Arkham game is Warner Bros. Montreal known for?

If it indeed turns out to be a Batman game that Warner Bros. Montreal is working on, it won’t be the first time they’ve made a game with the Caped Crusader. Even if Gotham Knights is discounted, they have experience with Batman, and that game is 2013’s Batman: Arkham Origins.

It’s notable for being the only main Arkham game not developed by Rocksteady, and that was reflected in its comparatively lower rating and reputation amongst fans and critics alike. It is commonly considered the least of the Arkham games, though some enjoy the younger, less refined version of Batman in the game. Gameplay-wise, many consider Batman: Arkham Origins to have the best boss fights in the series.

Warner Bros. Montreal is also known for developing the Batgirl DLC for Batman: Arkham Knight, in what turned out to be the best part of a less-than-impressive season pass.
