Batman: The Animated Series Producer On Why He Joined Disney
Alan Burnett served as a producer on Batman: The Animated Series until the series ended in 1995. But before he served as the producer, Burnett was a part of the team at Disney. Working on shows like The Smurfs, Johnny Quest, and, more, the transition to DC might have been not so smooth.
In an interview with The Pitch, Burnett revealed that there was one specific reason why he joined Disney in the first place. The reason had to do with budget and how it wasn’t enough for his imagination.
“Yeah, well, basically on all of that stuff, we’re writing for a younger audience. My first six or seven years was at Hanna-Barbera. I was at a brand-spanking new and perfect place to learn the business.”
He further continued,
“By the seventh year, I told my agent I really want better animation in the stuff I write. That was the reason why I moved to Disney for a while, as they were doing outstanding animation for Saturday morning.”
As the interview continued, Alan Burnett talked about how he joined DC and more particularly, how he got hooked on Batman: The Animated Series, and it’s got much to do with DCAU legend Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski.
Why Alan Burnett Joined DC!
It is not an overstatement when we say that DC Comics has some of the most iconic characters of all time. Ranging from Batman to Superman, Joker, and Darkseid, there are plenty of fish in the sea and Alan Burnett jumped at the right moment.
“She [Jean MacCurdy] got me to come over to do this Batman series and what sold it for me–because I really wanted to get out of Saturday morning and animation generally–was the trailer that Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski–the other producer–had made. I saw that and I said, “Well, I’ve gotta come over here.”
In the end, Batman: The Animated Series received a rating of 9/10 on IMDB and a whopping 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. The iconic series, produced by Alan Burnett is available to stream on Max in the U.S.
