Although the superhero and comic book genres have become popular on television and film, this was not the case prior to the 2000s. A major influence on superhero tales is the video game series known as the Batman Arkham Trilogy. Notable actor Mark Hamill, who played the voice of Joker in numerous DC Comics productions beginning in 1992 with Batman: The Animated Series, opened up in 2023 about the dark and twisted portrayal of Joker in the game series.
For Hamill, the superhero video game series by Rocksteady Studios revealed an entirely new world, as he hinted in a post on X honoring the game’s launch just over a decade ago. The Joker is portrayed as a merciless and unpredictable villain who continuously tests Batman’s resolve with his cunning plans and deceitful actions throughout the Arkham game series.
Playing the Ace of Knaves in a couple of Batman-based video games, Hamill first appeared as the character in Batman Vengeance (2001) and Batman: Arkham Asylum (2009). He later reprised the role in Batman: Arkham City (2011).
Mark Hamill’s Insights on The Sinister Evolution of Joker in Batman Arkham Trilogy
When Mark Hamill first voiced the part in 1992’s Batman: The Animated Series, he immediately won over fans with his outrageous yet eerie interpretation of the character. He was a great counterpoint to the late Kevin Conroy, who portrayed Batman in animated movies, video games, and the original series.
In 2023 (via X), the California-born actor, 72, reflected on his experiences as Joker and talked about how the critically acclaimed game series had made him into a “whole new Joker” in honor of the 12th anniversary of Batman: Arkham City.
12 years & a day ago today.
Freed from the constraints of television's Standards & Practices Dept. (TV censors) & aimed at a more mature audience, the Arkham trilogy was dark, gritty & extremely violent. This was a whole new Joker for me.🦇vs 🃏 https://t.co/bn2GXuDxQ3

The Batman Arkham games allowed Hamill, 72, to explore a darker and more violent side of the Batman mythos for a more mature audience. But we also can’t deny that Tim Burton’s Batman and Bruce Timm’s Batman: The Animated Series made significant contributions by redefining Batman as a dark hero.
Batman: The Animated Series had darker plotlines than one might expect for a children’s show, but it still gained popularity among both younger and older viewers. However, because of its violent content and subject matter, the series ran afoul of TV studios, forcing creatives to tone down some of the show’s stories to conform to the then-current television standards.
Many of the original creatives, including Conroy as Batman and Hamill as the Joker, returned to work on the Batman Arkham game series. Not only were the final products incredible superhero games, but they were also fantastic Batman stories that offered fans’ favorite actors an opportunity to explore a different interpretation that focused on more mature storylines.
Mark Hamill’s Iconic Voice as Joker: Shaping the Sinister Persona
The Batman Arkham series features some of Mark Hamill’s best work to date as the character. The actor, however, declared in interviews that he felt his time as the Joker was over after Kevin Conroy passed away, saying that it would not feel right to revisit the role without the late actor.
Nevertheless, the two actors’ distinct chemistry for their roles is evident in the Batman Arkham games, and it blends in well with their work on Batman: The Animated Series. Hamill made the following comment in an interview with Empire:
“Kevin was perfection. He was one of my favorite people on the planet, and I loved him like a brother. He truly cared for the people around him – his decency shone through everything he did. Every time I saw him or spoke with him, my spirits were elevated.
As fans of the Batman universe, we can never truly grow old or out of date with the various iterations of Joker that we have encountered. Well, take a look at the latest Joker 2 trailer and get ready to unleash mayhem on the world once again—the Clown Prince of Crime is back!
Batman: The Animated Series is available on Max.
