In addition to his iconic role in the space saga Star Wars, Hollywood star Mark Hamill is renowned for his prolific voice-acting career. Over the decades, he’s voiced multiple characters across various shows and movies, most notably being the DC villain Joker in Batman: The Animated Series.
Hamill further delved into DC territory with his portrayal of Trickster in the live-action series The Flash. And his talent transcended beyond DC, as he also took on the roles of two underrated Marvel villains in the animated Spider-Man shows.
Mark Hamill Voiced Two Spider-Man Villains
After taking on the roles of DC villains like Joker and Trickster, Mark Hamill secured the role of voicing Hobgoblin in Spider-Man: The Animated Series. Along with the Hamilton actor, Frank Gorshin was reportedly also considered for the role.
However, with his ability to bring complex and multifaceted villains to life as a voice artist, particularly with his portrayal of the Joker, Hamill eventually landed the role. He appeared in a total of eight episodes of the series.
And the 72-year-old actor did an amazing job, depicting the character as a common threat thrust into a position of immense power. Hamill has since become the sole actor to voice the Marvel villain Hobgoblin on both the small and big screen.
The Star Wars actor expanded his presence in Marvel animation by lending his voice to Nightmare in the animated series Ultimate Spider-Man, further showcasing his versatility as a voice actor beyond the realm of DC and Star Wars.
Michael Keaton’s Batman Encouraged Mark Hamill to Audition For Joker
In an interview with Wired, Mark Hamill reflected on the reason he auditioned for the role of Joker in Batman: The Animated Series. He explained that everyone was skeptical of Michael Keaton taking on the role of Batman due to his background as a comedy actor.
However, despite the controversy, Keaton eventually proved himself to be a great fit for the role. And his success as Batman gave The Empire Strikes Back star confidence to pursue the auction for one of his favorite characters, Joker.
“I mean they hadn’t even seen him, and they didn’t realize how great he would become,” he said. Hamill shared that although he was not sure if the makers would “hire Luke Skywalker to play the Joker.” He said that he felt completely relaxed as he believed that he would not get the role.
“Here I knew I couldn’t get the part, so, who cares? And I drove out of the parking lot thinking, ‘That’s the best Joker they’ll ever hear, and it’s too bad they can’t cast me.”
However, he was surprised upon learning he had landed the role. Hamill has since lent his voice to the character in various films, shows, and video games. However, The Machine star has recently hinted at retiring from the role, with his most recent portrayal being in Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part Three.
