Christopher Nolan is currently gearing up for the Oscars, where his latest movie, Oppenheimer (2023), has been nominated for 13 Academy Awards, including Best Director and Best Picture. Nolan is considered one of the most versatile and talented directors of our time, and if you don’t believe me, just ask Denis Villeneuve.
Denis Villeneuve, whose visionary movies have been amazing audiences for years, is currently busy with the upcoming release of his movie, Dune: Part Two. Dune: Part One, which came out in 2021, was a massive hit, and the second instalment is already getting rave reviewes from short clips that have been released of the movie and those who had rhe opportunity to see early screenings.
Denis Villeneuve and Christopher Nolan are, no doubt, two of the most important filmmakers of our generation. And with how they gush over each other and their work, we just can not get enough of it.
Denis Villeneuve Calls Christopher Nolan The Most Important Filmmaker of Our Time
The two visionary filmmakers, Christopher Nolan and Denis Villeneuve, recently had a conversation with the Raiders of the Lost podcast. Villeneuve, who is busy promoting Dune: Part Two, introduced Nolan to the small audience of media personnel. In doing so, he called Nolan the most important filmmaker of our generation. Villeneuve said,
“In my humble opinion, I should say, the best and definitely the most important filmmaker of our time, Christopher Nolan.”
Nolan is the favorite to win the Best Director Oscar this year, especially after already having won the Golden Globes and Critics Choice awards. Given Oppenheimer‘s success, which even Nolan says is the best movie so far of his career, no one will be shocked if he does go home with an award at the end of the night.
Christopher Nolan Compares Dune: Part Two With Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
Christopher Nolan was not one to stay back while being applauded. He took the stage to shower Villeneuve and his movies with praise. While talking about Dune and Dune 2, Nolan said he thinks they are some of the best movies ever made, especially given the complexity of the text written by Frank Herbert.
In conversation with the Raiders of the Lost podcast, Nolan said,
“For me, I don’t think its too much to say that if Dune: Part One was Star Wars, this to me was very much The Empire Strikes Back, which is my favorite of the Star Wars films. And I just think it’s an incredibly exciting expansion of all the things you introduced in the first one.”
Villeneuve was, obviously, very thankful for this comparison, and said that The Empire Strikes Back is a movie that has had a very big impact on his as a filmmaker. And to hear this kind of comparison of his work being made to a film he adores so much means a lot to him, especially coming from a filmmaker such as Nolan.
