The summer box office of last year was an epic showdown between two movies that couldn’t have been more different, aka Barbie and Oppenheimer. Both critically acclaimed and fan-favorite films, the two movies created a social and cultural phenomenon, embroiling almost the whole world of social media into the trend called Barbenheimer.
As expected, the movies have also been leading the award season, having already received countless nominations and awards. However, the Christopher Nolan-directed flick just did a surprising feat, bagging 5 awards at the Golden Globes, which hints that a previously unachievable feat might occur at the Academy Awards 2024.
Oppenheimer Beats Barbie In A Surprising Turn At Golden Globes 2024
The Golden Globes of this year was an event to behold, however, the surprise was greater than anyone could have expected. As was anticipated, the two blockbusters of 2023 received countless nominations, with Great Gerwig‘s Barbie getting 10 nominations and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer getting a total of 8 nominations.
While everyone expected the Margot Robbie starrer flick to secure a considerable amount of awards, Oppenheimer secured a total of 5 wins (via Golden Globes):
Oppenheimer for Best Motion Picture
Cillian Murphy for Best Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture — Drama
Robert Downey Jr. for Best Performance by a Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture
Christopher Nolan for Best Director
Ludwig Göransson, Oppenheimer for Best Original Score
Barbie on the other hand, despite having the most nominations and three Best Original Song nominations only managed to secure two wins at the Golden Globes, aka Cinematic and Box Office Achievement Award and Best Original Song for What Was I Made For.
Oppenheimer’s incredible decimation of the Golden Globes after winning in all the major categories has turned the tables, for although the Golden Globes and Oscars are two independent awards, the former has been a major precedent for the latter for years.
Oppenheimer Might Achieve A Rare Feat At The Oscars After Beating Barbie
Barbie might have beaten Oppenheimer at the global box office by grossing over $1.4 billion (via Box Office Mojo), but its $954 million grossing rival (via Box Office Mojo) might beat it at the award season this year. While both movies have received an impressive amount of nominations and wins till now, the Cillian Murphy starrer biographical film did an unthinkable feat that only one other movie in the past has managed to achieve at the Golden Globes Awards, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest.
In a rare feat, the film One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest managed to bag the Academy Awards for similar categories that it had already won at the Golden Globes. And since the Golden Globes have always been considered as the precedent for the Academy Awards, it is highly anticipated that even Oppenheimer will beat Barbie for the Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Director awards at the Oscars as well.
If it does manage to do so, this would be the first time in history for one movie to bag all the major awards at the Oscars. While there are certainly doubts, the chances of this happening are definitely in the positive seeing the vast difference in the total number of nominations and wins both movies have achieved. While Barbie has so far received 169 nominations and 50 wins, Oppenheimer has 112 wins against 254 nominations (via Wikipedia).
Both Barbie and Oppenheimer can be rented on Amazon Prime.
