Ben Affleck Used One Major Rule To Protect New Talent Against The ‘Evolution Of Streaming Services’
Before the debut of his film Air on Amazon Prime, Ben Affleck unveiled to Wired, a new compensation plan for a fairer streaming world in collaboration with Wired. The plan aimed to ensure that actors receive substantial compensation even after completing their work on a film, especially if the film continues to succeed for years post-release.
“It came to mind, slowly, through my experience producing and directing movies and looking at how the resources were spent. Also recognizing that the evolution of streaming services was putting a cap on people’s abilities to benefit in the long term on an annuity basis.“
Affleck’s inspiration for the plan came from his experience producing and directing movies, along with an awareness of how streaming services were affecting long-term benefits for individuals in the industry.
“One of my fondest memories is of discovering a $400 residual check in the mailbox when I was on the verge of bankruptcy—if you can call it that when you don’t own anything. If you’re an actor and you did a week on a TV show that was very successful, you would expect to be able to make some [annuity] money because of the success of the collective effort. Now, that’s not the case. So I constructed this model.”
Ben Affleck continued to discuss his experiences with diminishing residual pay in Hollywood. He fondly recalled discovering a $400 residual check in the mailbox during a financially challenging time. Affleck emphasized that in the past, actors could expect to receive annuity money for successful collective efforts, but this has changed in the current landscape.

‘‘I’m not built for to be famous. I don’t like it, you can keep it. I really have not gotten any benefit from it other than you know, I’ve gotten out of a few speeding tickets and some restaurant reservations and I don’t wait in line in Disneyland.”
The Batman actor made it as clear as day that he finds no happiness in being famous and simply would rather be left alone. Considering all the stories that have circulated about him during public outings, it’s not difficult to see why he would think this way.
