Elder Scrolls has been one of the most popular and well-regarded series by Bethesda Softworks. Especially with the success of Skyrim, the fifth mainline title in the series, fans have been looking forward to the next title.
Bethesda’s last project made waves initially and had fans getting on the hype train. These mainly were fans playing on the Xbox ecosystem due to the game’s exclusivity on Xbox and PC. But after the game’s release, it failed to be the sensation that it was hyped up to be and definitely could not reach the levels of success as some of the finest PlayStation exclusives. Now, Bethesda has confirmed its next title, and it is an Elder Scrolls title.
Bethesda announces Elder Scrolls Castles for an unexpected platform
Taking to Twitter, the game studio announced their project will hit Mobile platforms in 2024. The game is being developed by the same team that developed the mobile game Fallout Shelter, a title that was loved by mobile gamers fans of the series.
The game was also described in the Tweet. The studio stated that players in Castles could take control of a dynasty they create. They will have to deal with a continuously varying population, different individuals undertaking the charge and sitting on the ruler’s throne. The game will also feature elements of politics, betrayal, and much more.
It is also worth noting that the title has been on mobile marketplaces for some time and was only announced recently. It was listed as coming and was not downloadable or playable. It was only on January 18 that it was announced formally.
This is the opposite of what gaming studios do with new titles. It is usually that the title is first announced and then released on the market. Bethesda first floated the app on the app stores and mobile marketplaces and then revealed it. The studio also mentioned that its announcement is only a taste of what is yet to come because changes will be made to Castles before it releases. Bethesda also stated that it looks at player’s feedback and gauges the market sentiment before the launch.
The studio also provided the link to pre-register. At the end of the tweet, it was also stated that the game is available to play currently in the Philippines and more countries will gain access to it in the coming months.
Indeed, this was not what fans expected from the studio after Starfield‘s minor disappointment. While some people loved Starfield and what it offered, many did not. Regardless, this is how fans reacted to the announcement from Bethesda:
Other fans were visibly tired and frustrated because, as per them, Bethesda was wasting resources on The Elder Scrolls Castles. They said that:
Others took a dig at Bethesda’s acquisition by Microsoft and stated that:
Among all these people, some were genuinely excited for the title to be released as they were fans of Fallout Shelter. How the game will fare is unknown since it just got a soft launch and whether players will like it. Despite that, one thing is for sure: the announcement wasn’t what fans were looking for, especially after Starfield.
The sixth mainline Elder Scrolls game was announced in 2018 and only entered production after Starfield‘s launch in 2023. That means that it is at least five or six years away. Fans will wait for the title to grace the Xbox console lineup and PC, but if the last Bethesda console exclusive was any indication, it should not be overhyped. It may be the best game in the franchise or the worst one; regardless, since there is no announcement, expecting anything would not be wise.
Bethesda has to bounce back, offer its fans something better, and make up for the last title. That is because the last title was not a good representation of Bethesda’s ability to create video games that inspire.
