It is officially holiday season, and the festivities have begun in the video game industry as well, with Epic Games Store giving away a highly beloved title to gamers all across the globe completely free. Fallout 3 was originally released more than 15 years ago, in 2008, and it is considered to be one of the best titles in Bethesda’s iconic franchise. Now, fans can get their hands on the Game of the Year Edition of the excellent video game and download it without having to pay a single dollar.

Keep in mind that Fallout 3 being free is part of Epic Games Store’s series of “Free Mystery Games,” and since the price dropped to zero yesterday on December 23, it is only going to last for a few more hours until it goes back to its base price of $12.99.

Fallout 3 became completely free on the Epic Games Store yesterday, December 23, and according to the official listing, the 100% festive sale will last until December 24, which is today. To be even more specific, the title from Bethesda Softworks that garnered universal acclaim from critics and fans alike can be downloaded without any cost until 10 a.m. CT.

Epic has been actively taking part in the holiday celebrations with free mystery games, and since Christmas is less than 24 hours away, it feels like the perfect time to gift such a beloved game to fans.

It is absolutely amazing to see that Fallout 3 is not even the first title that the Epic Games Store has given out for free in 2023. In fact, Bethesda Game Studios’ action RPG is actually the fifth free game that the platform has offered this year. Before this, the store had given out Destiny 2, Melvor Idle, Art of Rally, and DNF Duel at no cost, in the true spirit of the holidays.

This seems to be an annual tradition from the Epic Store, since it offers free games during the holiday season every single year. The platform is known for launching titles on its store every Thursday, but when the holidays arrive, it starts to give out “mystery games” to attract more gamers and potentially rival arguably the biggest video game hub by Valve, Steam.

Of course, as the title suggests, since Epic wants to keep the mysterious and surprise element of the giveaways intact, it does not usually reveal the game until it shows up on the store, and this time, it is the Game of the Year Edition of Bethesda’s Fallout 3.

It honestly would have been pretty cool if the Epic Store was giving away just the base version of Fallout 3 for free, but as a delicious cherry on top, the platform is offering the Game of the Year Edition of Bethesda’s action RPG. For those unaware of what the GotY Edition of the game includes, it comes with every single DLC pack that has been released for the title, such as The Pitt, Point Lookout, Operation: Anchorage, Mothership Zeta, and Broken Steel.

The base game only lets players explore Washington, D.C., after an apocalypse, but the otherwise paid expansions take them to other locations as well.

Operation: Anchorage lets players go to the titular location in Alaska, whereas The Pitt introduces them to Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition also brings other locations, such as Point Lookout State Park in Maryland, while also taking a detour out of Earth. The free, limited-time title by Bethesda Softworks also lets fans head out to outer space, so it feels like a no-brainer to just download the game from the Epic Store without paying anything for it.

In just December 2023, the Epic Store offered Art of Rally for free just a day before putting Fallout 3 up for sale. The Legacy Collection of Destiny 2 was available for free from December 13 to 20, whereas Melvor Idle became the mystery game from December 21 to 22. There is definitely not a better time to get introduced to Bethesda’s excellent title than now.
