Netflix recently dropped another banger animated series in the form of Blue Eye Samurai. The animated TV show has received nothing but positive reviews from fans for a plethora of reasons. The show’s phenomenal animation is just one of those reasons.
More importantly, the series is an epic vengeance tale of a mixed-race samurai who wants to destroy four men, who made her an outcast during the 17th century Edo period Japan. While the plot of the series stands strong on its own, it certainly took inspiration from Barbra Streisand’s 1983 movie Yentl.
Blue Eye Samurai and Yentl are Epic Tales About the Fight Against the Oppression of Women
There is no doubt that Blue Eye Samurai has the potential to become arguably the best animated series of the year for Netflix. After all, the show is a masterpiece from almost every standpoint. Be it animation, dialogue delivery, or the plot, Blue Eye Samurai excels all around.
While it would be difficult to find an animated parallel to the series, Barbra Streisand’s movie Yentl can be compared to it from a feminist point of view.
Both characters go through a lot of struggle to rise in a society that is primarily dominated by men. Yentl is a Jewish woman who refuses to abide by the traditional role of a woman. Instead, she goes to lengths to study Talmud. So much so that she disguises herself as a man to further pursue her studies.
On the other hand, Mizu was discriminated against by society due to being mixed-raced. She seeks revenge against the male-dominant society by becoming a master of the sword. Moreover, similar to Yentl, Mizu lives in disguise as a man.
Is Blue Eye Samurai Returning For Season 2?
Blue Eye Samurai was a huge success for Netflix. Evidently, it has increased the bar for how animated shows should be on the streaming giant. After all, apart from featuring a beautiful art style, the series falls in the adult category.
As a result, it was loved by most adults who were aching for an animated series with an excellent plot. Keeping that in mind, one would assume that the show has already been renewed for a second season.
However, as of now, Netflix is yet to confirm or deny the rumors about a potential Blue Eye Samurai season 2 hitting its library.
