Ever since Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford teased that the studio was working on “the big one” back in 2021, fans have been eagerly anticipating the next installment in the beloved Borderlands series. While the game hasn’t been officially announced yet, we have enough evidence to confirm that Borderlands 4 is indeed in active development.

The announcement by 2K’s president was made after Gearbox Software was acquired by Take-Two Interactive, and they are happy to work again with Gearbox on the next installment in the series. While the game hasn’t been officially announced yet, this proves that Borderlands 4 is indeed in active development.

Borderlands 4 will be the fourth mainline entry in the ever-popular first-person looter shooter series by Gearbox Software. Officially, it will be the fifth overall game in the Borderlands franchise, with Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel bridging the gap between Borderlands 2 and Telltale Games’ Tales from the Borderlands.

Although the game hasn’t taken center stage yet, it’s likely to continue the pattern of standalone adventures seen in previous titles. There is one burning question that every Borderlands fan will be asking: What happened to Lilith after she prevented the moon from crashing into Pandora?

Gearbox Founder Randy Pitchford dropped major hints on the development of Borderlands 4 in an interview about the Borderlands movie. When asked about what his favourite Borderlands game is, he said

Clearly, we’re working on something. And I know what we’re working on, and holy shit… It’s the greatest thing we’ve ever done. And I can’t wait, but it’s not time yet. It’s not time yet. There will be a time.

Another major hint came from the 2K’s president, David Ismailer when he said “We have loved partnering with Gearbox on every iteration of the Borderlands franchise and are excited to be in active development on the next installment in the series.”

All these major hints and unofficial announcement shows that Borderlands 4 is in active development and players will soon be able to enjoy the looter shooter game. The earliest chance we’ll have to learn about Borderlands 4 will be during the Summer Game Fest on June 7th. All in all, Borderlands 4 promises to be an exciting continuation of the franchise, building upon the foundation laid by its predecessors.
