Disney’s latest superhero movie, The Marvels, grossed around $47 million at the domestic box office in the weekend debut. It marks one of the worst domestic weekend debut in the history of the whole Marvel franchise.

The Marvels couldn’t even crack up to $50 million (below than 2008 The Incredible Hulk), and definitely is the biggest bust of the year.

The poor reception, lack of promotion from the main stars due to the (recently ended) SAG-AFTRA strike, and claims of superhero fatigue hindered its success. Anyways, there’s no doubt that The Marvels is the studio’s first true flop.

With this, speculations are sparking that Brie Larson is ready to leave the MCU. It comes after the talks—The Marvels‘ reception damaged her reputation.

As per the new book titled MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, author Joanna Robinson claimed that Brie Larson has become disappointed while playing Captain Marvel in the latest flick.

Robinson wrote that the future of the Marvel icons was unclear. That’s why “the departure of franchise anchors like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Scarlett Johansson had already taken its toll, as had the shocking loss of Chadwick Boseman, but other MCU stalwarts were heading for the exits.”

“The ‘Guardians of the Galaxy‘ cast went on a farewell tour, Brie Larson grew disillusioned, and Marvel tussled with Sony in a custody battle over Tom Holland,” the author continued.

And even in the interview with The Watch podcast, Robinson explained what she wrote in her book. She revealed that Larson reportedly wants to stop playing Captain Marvel. She said, “Marvel Studios] put Brie Larson in [a prominent place in the MCU]. I don’t know if Brie Larson was the wrong person for the role necessarily. But the toxic backlash means that Brie Larson doesn’t want to play Carol Danvers anymore.”

Through Robinson’s statement, it looks like the negative backlash on the film took a toll on Marvels’ lead actress.

The recent comments of Robinson made fans worried about the future of Brie Larson’s character in MCU. After renowned actors like Downey Jr. and Evans stepped down, Larson could be the next big star to leave the franchise.

In an X post posted by The Hollywood Handle, it was revealed that when she was asked about the next Captain Marvel appearance, the actress said, “There is definitely something that I would want to say, but I am not going to…”

Fans already started to speculate this cryptic comment and tied it with her exit from the character of Captain Marvel. A fan said that Larson is tired of the backlash she’s facing because of the movie’s failure.

It would now be interesting to see how Marvel Studios would try to keep the actress in the MCU.

The Marvels is screening in theaters these days.
