Being part of superhero movies is an exciting opportunity for any actor, for it is the easiest way to become a celebrated part of popular culture and be remembered for years to come. And so, being part of franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe is on the bucket lists of many actors, both young and old.
Yet, non-disclosure agreements or other contractual obligations often prevent actors from addressing their casting before the release of official news, leading to several actors lying about their potential castings. While actors like Brie Larson, Paul Rudd, Benedict Cumberbatch, and more have lied about their castings in the past, 19-year-old Dafne Keen is the latest to do so.
Dafne Keen Effortlessly Lied to Keep Her Marvel Casting a Secret
Dafne Keen is in Deadpool & Wolverine after all, as the final trailer of the upcoming potential blockbuster reveals. Reprising her role as X-23 aka the child of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, first seen in the iconic Logan, the actress is back as Laura.
Rumored to be in the film, the actress has been lying about her involvement in the film for quite some time now. Throughout the press tour for her Star Wars’ series, The Acolyte, the 19-year-old Spanish actress had consistently stated that she has no role whatsoever in the Ryan Reynolds-starrer epic. Just a month ago, the actress even lied to On Deman Entertainment, stating,
It would have been amazing to be part of it, but I’ll just go watch it as a fan, to see my old buddy in it.
While fans had given up all hope of her coming back as Laura, as the final trailer reveals, the actress had been effortlessly lying about her casting. Right after her casting was confirmed, Keen stated to Entertainment Weekly how fun it was to keep lying and that she was inspired by Andrew Garfield, who infamously lied several times about his appearance in the blockbuster, Spider-Man: No Way Home (via the Happy Sad Confused podcast).
A brilliant actress through and through, Dafne Keen is definitely not the only actor to have kept her Marvel casting a secret.
Dafne Keen is Not the Only Actor to Have Lied about Her Marvel Casting
Before Dafne Keen’s effortless lying, there have been several other well-known Marvel stars who have kept their Marvel casting secret. Back in 2013, when Marvel Studios was busy making Ant-Man, Paul Rudd was asked by Absolute Radio about portraying Scott Lang in the upcoming film. Stating that his casting was all rumors, it was a shock for fans when his casting was later confirmed.
Much like his co-stars, Benedict Cumberbatch too lied about starring as the Sorcerer Supreme in Doctor Strange. While doing a Comic-Con panel for Penguins of Madagascar, the actor promptly denied his involvement when asked if he would be interested in playing Dr. Strange. And we all know how that went.
Even Brie Larson denied playing her Marvel character when asked 8 years ago by MTV UK if she would be playing Captain Marvel in the MCU. Just a month after this interview, the actress was confirmed to be starring as Carol Danvers in the superhero franchise.
Over the years, She-Hulk star Tatiana Maslany (via Vulture), Hailee Steinfeld (via Radio Times), and even Jonathan Majors (via Jimmy Fallon) have lied about their respective Marvel casting. While they are not the first or the last actors to do so, Marvel Studios’ ability to keep things hushed up is also a big reason why the franchise is as big as it is today.
Deadpool & Wolverine will be in theatres on July 26, 2024.
