Larson’s Carol Danvers is the inherent lead of the film and she has the space to justify her prowess and the glorification of the feminine essence through the film. Director DaCosta candidly revealed how the thematic essence of the movie resembles Captain Marvel defending the universe as the women’s prowess keeping the world from collapsing.

Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers a.k.a. Captain Marvel is ever-ready to tackle the galactic threats in the universe protecting it at all costs.  So, she’s not essentially Earthbound. She’d join the Avengers when threats like Thanos lurk on Earth, when she’s not among mighty Earthly heroes, she would be fighting other battles in another region in the sky. “The conversations are really just like, ‘Okay, who is she?” director Nia DaCosta reflected on Captain Marvel while speaking with io9.

“How can her struggle holding the universe on her shoulders be something that can feel universal?’ For me, I think that a lot of women feel like they’re holding the world, their family, their job, everything on their shoulders. The thing that I come back to is how important family is to helping them get through that kind of burden. And so that’s the big theme in the movie. That’s something that Brie and I talked about as well,” she explained.

But contrary to the sequel to Larson’s previous MCU solo Captain Marvel, the new adventure invites two more female superheroes to join her in the battle with the villainous forces.

Even beyond movies, Larson has been an advocate of woman empowerment and inclusivity. The Marvels did just that. Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel and Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau joined the movie. DaCosta revealed that Larson was super excited to bring two more female superheroes to air her adventure fighting alongside in the battle with Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton).

“Brie was so excited and a real advocate for bringing the two other women into the movie. And part of what I think works so well about it is that she has a foil. She finally has people who are, you know, heroes as well, and also having their own issues and issues with her or or a specific relationship with her that she has to sort out,” DaCosta told io9.

Prior to its release, the movie had been through a lot of bumpy roads. Now, it would be interesting if the movie could alter the perception. Fans can witness the trio’s adventure now as The Marvels is currently showing in the theaters.
