Brie Larson’s The Marvels has officially become the lowest-grossing Marvel film in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film was meant to be a sequel to the 2019 film, Captain Marvel which happened to be a smash-hit blockbuster at the box office. However, this was not the case with the sequel as it turned out to be a massive disappointment, and many even questioned Larson’s future in the franchise.
However, the poor performance of The Marvels at the box office is not the only thing that Marvel Studios should be concerned about. The sequel only adds to the list of failed movies that the franchise has been producing since the release of Avengers: Endgame. That’s not all because Disney+, the OTT platform of Marvel Studios announced that over the period of the final quarter of 2023, they have lost a massive amount of subscribers.
The Marvels Adds to The Troubles of Disney
Disney+ which happens to be the OTT platform featuring all the major Marvel movies and series, has been struggling immensely since the final quarter of 2023. As per Variety, Disney+ has lost 1.3 million subscribers in just the final quarter of 2023, after its price hike. However, the platform managed to narrow down its losses by $300 million during the October-December tenure.
The change in policies and prices had shown instant effect as the OTT platform, which comprises of international users, excluding the India-based Disney+ Hotstar, comprised a total members of 112.6 million in the previous quarter, but that number reportedly dropped to 111.3 million subscribers. While Disney was recovering from its losses, Brie Larson’s The Marvels again put the organization on its knees as the film which had a massive budget of around $270 million had a gross revenue of $199.7 million at the worldwide box office, resulting in a loss of $70.3 million.
The failure at the box office was not surprising at all as Bob Iger had commented that The Marvels was a disappointment before its release, and gave reasons which support his comments, and justified the sequel tanking at the box office.
Brie Larson Talks About The Future of Captain Marvel in The Marvel Cinematic Universe
After a disappointing run at the box and having a sequel that has the lowest box office collection in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans criticised her and believed it was the last time, they would be seeing her in the superhero franchise. However, that was not the case because, during an exclusive interview with Entertainment Tonight, Larson talked about the future of Captain Marvel in the MCU.
“I think there is still so much inside of Carol – I feel like getting to be on this team just cracked her open in a way that she hadn’t been and I really loved that for her,” adding, “I just loved her letting the shoulders drop a little bit, and not need to feel like all the responsibility was on her – So I think that there is just so much more to go. She is just a great character to continue to grow with. It’s like, as I am growing she is growing.”
The sequel’s failure made fans question Brie Larson’s future in the MCU, which was a surprise because when the film was initially released it had a good collection, followed by mixed reviews. However, that soon turned into a different story, as the film started to receive negative reviews because of the plotholes and the poor CGI featured in the film.
The Marvels can be streamed on Disney+.
