After thirteen long years of anticipation, director James Cameron finally reintroduced the world to Pandora with Avatar: The Way of Water. While he was initially worried about if the sequel would do well given the current scene of theatres, his worries were brought to an end by the sequel’s good reception.

Avatar: The Way of Water has currently made $1.38 billion at the worldwide box office, and it looks like the numbers will keep on increasing. However, given the enormous budget, the film has no choice but to keep on reeling in more and more earnings just to break even. While James Cameron once implied that his sequel would need to make at least $2 billion at the box office to break even, he has now brought down the figure to $1.5 billion.

According to Culture Crave, James Cameron is taking back his previous statement where he said Avatar: The Way of Water needs to be the third or fourth highest-grossing film at the box office in the history of Hollywood to break even and make some profit. Now, the director has brought down the number from $2 billion to $1.5 billion stating that he was “a little inaccurate” with his previous estimate.

This means that instead of beating the third or fourth highest-grossing films, which are Titanic and Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens respectively, Cameron’s sequel only needs to take the place of Furious 7 which is at number ten with $1.51 billion.

Keeping its streak alive, The Way of Water managed to dominate the New Year’s weekend bringing in $63.4 million domestically. This brings the total to $421.6 million domestically and $956.9 million internationally. Combine them together and you have a whopping figure of $1.3 billion. Thanks to the audience celebrating their New Year’s with the residents of Pandora, The Way of Water has become the fifteenth highest-grossing film of all time. The movie is sandwiched between Black Panther on top and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 on the bottom.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish came second in the race. However, the movie’s numbers were nowhere near The Way of Water’s. With a $16.3 million earning over the weekend, there was no way The Last Wish was even competition for Cameron’s film. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever came third with $4.8 million, Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody was fourth with $4.2 million, and the fifth place went to Babylon with an underwhelming $2.7 million.

As far as this weekend goes, The Way of Water had absolutely no competition which made Cameron reaching his new estimate even more of a reality.
