Avatar: The Way of Water made its way to worldwide theaters early this month, and reports about its upcoming sequels are making rounds, too. It seems that James Cameron is conflicted about the release dates of Avatar 3 and 4 despite the films receiving confirmed dates from Disney.

The Way of Water is the much-awaited sequel to the original 2009 movie. It has been delayed for 13 years due to several reasons. Fans would be delighted to know that Cameron simultaneously shot the future movies with the latest one, meaning they do not have to wait that long.

Director James Cameron Reveals Ideal Dates For Future Avatar Films

James Cameron spoke with The Wrap and revealed when the next Avatar films will be released in theaters. The director noted that these are ideally his preferred dates, which brings a lot of confusion to fans.

These stories exist. We know exactly what we’re doing. We know what these movies are going to be. We just have to go through the process of getting them done. Ideally, two years from now, [Avatar 3] comes out. Ideally, maybe three years after that, [Avatar 4] comes out. Then maybe a couple years after that, [Avatar 5] comes out.”

Despite the impending long wait, Cameron explained why the movies need to be released as soon as possible. Consistency is as important as storytelling, and it is imperative that viewers do not lose their interest in the narrative.

If they’re going to invest in these characters, they’re gonna invest in these worlds, we’re going to give it to them at a regular cadence, ideally. That was the game plan.”

This is to make up for the years that Cameron and the Avatar franchise have been gone for so long. It is amazing, though, that despite more than a decade of absence from mainstream media, Avatar: The Way of Water still managed to churn a profit.

Disney And Cameron To Reach An Agreement For Movies’ Release Dates

The delay may be due to unforeseen events that may take place in between movies. Cameron clearly does not want to repeat the lengthy gap his original movie has with its sequel but, based on his statement, there must be some internal conflict happening between Cameron and Disney.

Nevertheless, Cameron specifically said that these dates are only ideal, and with a visionary filmmaker like him, he knows exactly what he wants for his projects. Hopefully, the studio and the director will come up with an agreement and confirm their final release dates.

Whether the announced release dates may be moved, fans expect the movies to still fall in the month of December.
