Activision releases a new Call of Duty title almost every year and once the yearly game drops, players anticipate what the next entry in the series will be. The Call of Duty games have been set in different timelines such as World War 2, the modern era, and the future, and are praised for their storytelling and gameplay.
While this year’s Modern Warfare 3 did not receive as well a reception as the developer had hoped for instead was mocked, the upcoming games might take players to the good old days. An exclusive report has now stated that Call of Duty 2025 will be a direct sequel to the popular 2012 title Black Ops 2 and will bring new features, remastered maps, and more.
Call of Duty 2025 Will Reportedly be a Black Ops 2 Sequel
Treyarch’s Call of Duty Black Ops 2 was released in 2012 and is one of the most acclaimed and loved games in the franchise. It was also the first COD title that took players in the future. Black Ops 2 was set in 2025 and was highly praised for its maps, story, gameplay, and multiplayer, and was a commercial success, grossing over $500 million in just 24 hours of its release, and has sold nearly 30 million copies to date.
It seems like the developers are trying to take advantage of the game’s popularity and setting the 2025 installment right after the events of the game. According to a report by Insider Gaming, the Call of Duty 2025 entry will be a futuristic sequel to Black Ops 2 and will be set in the year 2030, five years after the events of the first game.
The game is currently in development under the codename “Saturn” and will bring the fan-favorite protagonists as they go up against a new enemy after the death of Menendez and will add a new turn to the narrative. However, it has not been known yet who is developing the game. The game will also bring new features mixed with classic, new as well as remastered maps from the original game, and an overhaul to the movement system.
The game will also bring back the classic pick-10 Create-a-Class system, gunfight mode, and round-based Zombies. The round-based Zombies mode has been missing from COD titles but will finally be returning to the game and is also rumored to be present in next year’s entry. It was also noted that the 2025 game was first supposed to exclusively feature only the old remastered maps but after seeing the response for Modern Warfare 3, developers decided to bring new maps.
If the reports turn out to be true then this will be the second time that COD will be getting back-to-back sequels for a sub-franchise. Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3 are the first games in the Modern Warfare sub-franchise to get back-to-back direct sequels. The report also added that Modern Warfare 3 was developed just in 16 months due to internal matters which resulted in players getting a remastered map and 5-6 hours of the campaign which was met with backlash.
The future of the “carry forward” system is still unclear as it has been said that COD 2025 is going to be a “completely new game,” but nothing about it was either confirmed or denied. However, it most likely will not feature the system due to changes in the game’s strategy but is said to be available in the 2024 installment.
The news comes after last month’s report stating that COD 2024 is going to be a Black Ops title. The game will allegedly be called Black Ops Gulf War and will be a sequel to the 2020’s Black Ops Cold War. As per the game’s title, it would be set during the Gulf War around the 1990s, and could bring several real-world leaders and politicians just like Black Ops Cold War but nothing has been confirmed officially so far about any of the installments.
